- American aircraft: means an aircraft registered under the laws of the United States. See Michigan Laws 421.56
- American vessel: as used in this act means a vessel documented or numbered under the laws of the United States, or a vessel which is neither documented nor numbered under the laws of the United States nor documented under the laws of any foreign country, if its crew is employed solely by 1 or more citizens or residents of the United States or corporations organized under the laws of the United States or of any state. See Michigan Laws 421.56
- Annuity: A periodic (usually annual) payment of a fixed sum of money for either the life of the recipient or for a fixed number of years. A series of payments under a contract from an insurance company, a trust company, or an individual. Annuity payments are made at regular intervals over a period of more than one full year.
- Appeal: A request made after a trial, asking another court (usually the court of appeals) to decide whether the trial was conducted properly. To make such a request is "to appeal" or "to take an appeal." One who appeals is called the appellant.
- Assets: (1) The property comprising the estate of a deceased person, or (2) the property in a trust account.
- Balance: means :
(1) As applied to an employer's experience account or to the nonchargeable benefits account, the initial balance of that account plus the credits and minus the charges that are made in accordance with this act. See Michigan Laws 421.18Beneficiary: A person who is entitled to receive the benefits or proceeds of a will, trust, insurance policy, retirement plan, annuity, or other contract. Source: OCC Contract: A legal written agreement that becomes binding when signed. Corporation: A legal entity owned by the holders of shares of stock that have been issued, and that can own, receive, and transfer property, and carry on business in its own name. Department: means the department of health and human services. See Michigan Laws 600.1099aa Dependent: A person dependent for support upon another. employer: includes an Indian tribe or tribal unit for which services are performed in employment as defined in subsection (9). See Michigan Laws 421.13l employment: includes service performed in the employ of an Indian tribe or tribal unit, if the service is excluded from employment as that term is defined in the federal unemployment tax act, chapter 23 of subtitle C of the internal revenue code of 1986, 26 U. See Michigan Laws 421.13l Entitlement: A Federal program or provision of law that requires payments to any person or unit of government that meets the eligibility criteria established by law. Entitlements constitute a binding obligation on the part of the Federal Government, and eligible recipients have legal recourse if the obligation is not fulfilled. Social Security and veterans' compensation and pensions are examples of entitlement programs. Evidence: Information presented in testimony or in documents that is used to persuade the fact finder (judge or jury) to decide the case for one side or the other. Experience account: means an account in the unemployment compensation fund showing an employer's experience with respect to contribution payments and benefit charges under this act, determined and recorded in the manner provided in this act. See Michigan Laws 421.3 family: means all individuals whom the child and parent define as family. See Michigan Laws 600.1099aa Family treatment court: means either of the following:
(i) A court-supervised treatment program for individuals with a civil child abuse or neglect case and who are diagnosed with a substance use disorder. See Michigan Laws 600.1099aaFamily-centered: means a treatment approach that is designed to meet the needs of each member of a family, not just the individual diagnosed with a substance abuse disorder, and recognizes that families are diverse and can be made up of nuclear family members, extended family members, fictive kin, and nonblood relations. See Michigan Laws 600.1099aa Freedom of Information Act: A federal law that mandates that all the records created and kept by federal agencies in the executive branch of government must be open for public inspection and copying. The only exceptions are those records that fall into one of nine exempted categories listed in the statute. Source: OCC governmental entity: means this state or any of its instrumentalities, a county, city, township, village, school district, community college district, community hospital district, any agency authorized to exercise a governmental function in a limited geographical area, or other political subdivision, any instrumentality of 1 or more of these units, or any of these units and 1 or more other states or political subdivisions of those states. See Michigan Laws 421.50a Jurisdiction: (1) The legal authority of a court to hear and decide a case. Concurrent jurisdiction exists when two courts have simultaneous responsibility for the same case. (2) The geographic area over which the court has authority to decide cases. Lawyer-guardian ad litem: means that term as defined in section 13a of chapter XIIA of the probate code of 1939, 1939 PA 288, MCL 712A. See Michigan Laws 600.1099aa Lease: A contract transferring the use of property or occupancy of land, space, structures, or equipment in consideration of a payment (e.g., rent). Source: OCC month: means a calendar month; the word "year" a calendar year; and the word "year" alone shall be equivalent to the words "year of our Lord". See Michigan Laws 8.3j Participant: means an individual who is admitted into a family treatment court. See Michigan Laws 600.1099aa Partnership: A voluntary contract between two or more persons to pool some or all of their assets into a business, with the agreement that there will be a proportional sharing of profits and losses. person: may extend and be applied to bodies politic and corporate, as well as to individuals. See Michigan Laws 8.3l Probate: Proving a will Prosecutor: means the prosecuting attorney of the county, attorney general, or attorney retained by the department. See Michigan Laws 600.1099aa Remainder: An interest in property that takes effect in the future at a specified time or after the occurrence of some event, such as the death of a life tenant. state: when applied to the different parts of the United States, shall be construed to extend to and include the District of Columbia and the several territories belonging to the United States; and the words "United States" shall be construed to include the district and territories. See Michigan Laws 8.3o Statute: A law passed by a legislature. Termination: means removal from the family treatment court due to a new offense, noncompliance, absconding, voluntary withdrawal, medical discharge, or death. See Michigan Laws 600.1099aa United States: shall be construed to include the district and territories. See Michigan Laws 8.3o Violent offender: means an individual who is currently charged with or has pled guilty to an offense involving the death of or serious bodily injury to any individual, whether or not death or serious bodily injury is an element of the offense, or an offense that is criminal sexual conduct of any degree.
