- Affidavit: A written statement of facts confirmed by the oath of the party making it, before a notary or officer having authority to administer oaths.
- Alleged father: means a man who is alleged to have fathered the child who is the subject of an action to establish the father's paternity under this act. See Michigan Laws 722.1492
- Arrest: Taking physical custody of a person by lawful authority.
- Chief judge: The judge who has primary responsibility for the administration of a court but also decides cases; chief judges are determined by seniority.
- Child born out of wedlock: means a child conceived and born to a woman who was not married from the conception to the date of birth of the child, or a child that the court has determined to be a child born or conceived during a marriage but not the issue of that marriage. - Contract: A legal written agreement that becomes binding when signed.
- Corporation: A legal entity owned by the holders of shares of stock that have been issued, and that can own, receive, and transfer property, and carry on business in its own name.
- Court: means the circuit court. See Michigan Laws 722.1492
- Department: means the department of human services. See Michigan Laws 722.1492
- Dismissal: The dropping of a case by the judge without further consideration or hearing. Source:
- Friend of the court act: means the friend of the court act, 1982 PA 294, MCL 552. See Michigan Laws 722.1492
- Guardian: A person legally empowered and charged with the duty of taking care of and managing the property of another person who because of age, intellect, or health, is incapable of managing his (her) own affairs.
- in writing: shall be construed to include printing, engraving, and lithographing; except that if the written signature of a person is required by law, the signature shall be the proper handwriting of the person or, if the person is unable to write, the person's proper mark, which may be, unless otherwise expressly prohibited by law, a clear and classifiable fingerprint of the person made with ink or another substance. - Jurisdiction: (1) The legal authority of a court to hear and decide a case. Concurrent jurisdiction exists when two courts have simultaneous responsibility for the same case. (2) The geographic area over which the court has authority to decide cases.
- Obligation: An order placed, contract awarded, service received, or similar transaction during a given period that will require payments during the same or a future period.
- Partnership: A voluntary contract between two or more persons to pool some or all of their assets into a business, with the agreement that there will be a proportional sharing of profits and losses.
- Party: means a child's mother or a child's alleged or legally established father under this act. See Michigan Laws 722.1492
- Person: means an individual, partnership, corporation, association, governmental entity, or other legal entity. See Michigan Laws 722.1492
- Reporter: Makes a record of court proceedings and prepares a transcript, and also publishes the court's opinions or decisions (in the courts of appeals).
- Service of process: The service of writs or summonses to the appropriate party.
- state: when applied to the different parts of the United States, shall be construed to extend to and include the District of Columbia and the several territories belonging to the United States; and the words "United States" shall be construed to include the district and territories. - Support: means that term as defined in section 2a of the friend of the court act, MCL 552. See Michigan Laws 722.1492
- Support and parenting time enforcement act: means the support and parenting time enforcement act, 1982 PA 295, MCL 552. See Michigan Laws 722.1492
- Support formula: means the support formula developed by the state friend of the court bureau under section 19 of the friend of the court act, MCL 552. See Michigan Laws 722.1492
