A county, statutory or home rule charter city, or town may apply to the Federal Railroad Administration for the establishment of a “quiet zone” in which the sounding of horns, whistles, or other audible warnings by locomotives is regulated or prohibited. All quiet zones, regulations, and ordinances adopted under this section must conform to federal law and the regulations of the Federal Railroad Administration under United States Code, title 49, § 20153.
