- Appropriation: The provision of funds, through an annual appropriations act or a permanent law, for federal agencies to make payments out of the Treasury for specified purposes. The formal federal spending process consists of two sequential steps: authorization

The state auditor is authorized to appoint, and within the limits of his appropriation to fix the compensation of such auditors, accountants, supervisors, examiners, clerks and other employees as may be necessary in the performance of his duties under the law.
