Terms Used In Missouri Laws 528.490

  • Defendant: In a civil suit, the person complained against; in a criminal case, the person accused of the crime.
  • State: when applied to any of the United States, includes the District of Columbia and the territories, and the words "United States" includes such district and territories. See Missouri Laws 1.020
  • Summons: Another word for subpoena used by the criminal justice system.

Upon the filing of such petition, the clerk shall issue a summons, directed to the sheriff of each county in this state in which any defendant resides, with a copy of the petition, which shall be served as in ordinary civil cases.
