- Probation: A sentencing alternative to imprisonment in which the court releases convicted defendants under supervision as long as certain conditions are observed.
- Trial: A hearing that takes place when the defendant pleads "not guilty" and witnesses are required to come to court to give evidence.
The board of probation and parole shall have and exercise concurrent powers of probation and parole with the trial courts of the circuit and shall have the same power and authority as that conferred upon the court, or the judge thereof, under the provisions of sections 559.012 to 559.036.
