March nineteenth is hereby designated as “Lloyd Gaines Day” in Missouri. The citizens of this state are encouraged to participate in appropriate events and activities to remember Gaines and his important role in the early twentieth century civil rights movement. Gaines was denied admission to the University of Missouri School of Law and won his court case requiring the state to admit him or establish a second law school for black students. The state opted to establish a second law school, but Gaines went missing before he could enroll.
