- Amendment: A proposal to alter the text of a pending bill or other measure by striking out some of it, by inserting new language, or both. Before an amendment becomes part of the measure, thelegislature must agree to it.
- American sign language: means visual American sign language, tactile American sign language, or protactile American sign language. See Montana Code 52-2-902
- Appeal: A request made after a trial, asking another court (usually the court of appeals) to decide whether the trial was conducted properly. To make such a request is "to appeal" or "to take an appeal." One who appeals is called the appellant.
- Appropriation: The provision of funds, through an annual appropriations act or a permanent law, for federal agencies to make payments out of the Treasury for specified purposes. The formal federal spending process consists of two sequential steps: authorization
- Child welfare services: means the establishing, extending, and strengthening of child welfare services, especially in predominantly rural areas, for the protection and care of abused or neglected children. See Montana Code 52-2-101
- Complaint: A written statement by the plaintiff stating the wrongs allegedly committed by the defendant.
- Contract: A legal written agreement that becomes binding when signed.
- Conviction: A judgement of guilt against a criminal defendant.
- Corporation: A legal entity owned by the holders of shares of stock that have been issued, and that can own, receive, and transfer property, and carry on business in its own name.
- Department: means the department of public health and human services provided for in 2-15-2201. See Montana Code 52-2-802

- Direct access: means that an individual has or likely will have person-to-person spoken or physical contact with or access to a program participant. See Montana Code 52-2-802
- English: means spoken English, written English, or English with or without the use of visual supplements, cued speech, or manually coded English. See Montana Code 52-2-902
- Fiscal year: The fiscal year is the accounting period for the government. For the federal government, this begins on October 1 and ends on September 30. The fiscal year is designated by the calendar year in which it ends; for example, fiscal year 2006 begins on October 1, 2005 and ends on September 30, 2006.
- Guardian: A person legally empowered and charged with the duty of taking care of and managing the property of another person who because of age, intellect, or health, is incapable of managing his (her) own affairs.
- Injunction: An order of the court prohibiting (or compelling) the performance of a specific act to prevent irreparable damage or injury.
- Jurisdiction: (1) The legal authority of a court to hear and decide a case. Concurrent jurisdiction exists when two courts have simultaneous responsibility for the same case. (2) The geographic area over which the court has authority to decide cases.
- Language: means the use of American sign language or English. See Montana Code 52-2-902
- Language developmental milestones: means milestones of development aligned with the existing state instruments used to meet the requirements of 20 U. See Montana Code 52-2-902
- License: means a written document issued by the department that the license holder has complied with this part and the applicable standards and rules for programs. See Montana Code 52-2-802
- Licensee: means the holder of a license issued by the department in accordance with the provisions of this part. See Montana Code 52-2-802
- Partnership: A voluntary contract between two or more persons to pool some or all of their assets into a business, with the agreement that there will be a proportional sharing of profits and losses.
- Person: includes a corporation or other entity as well as a natural person. See Montana Code 1-1-201
- Person associated with the program: means any owner, partner, member, employee, or contractor providing professional or occupational services to a program. See Montana Code 52-2-802
- Probation: A sentencing alternative to imprisonment in which the court releases convicted defendants under supervision as long as certain conditions are observed.
- Process: means a writ or summons issued in the course of judicial proceedings. See Montana Code 1-1-202
- Program: means a private alternative adolescent residential or outdoor program that provides a structured, private, alternative residential setting for youth who are experiencing emotional, behavioral, or learning problems and who have a history of failing in academic, social, moral, or emotional development at home or in less-structured traditional settings. See Montana Code 52-2-802
- Property: means real and personal property. See Montana Code 1-1-205
- Public defender: Represent defendants who can't afford an attorney in criminal matters.
- State: when applied to the different parts of the United States, includes the District of Columbia and the territories. See Montana Code 1-1-201
- Writing: includes printing. See Montana Code 1-1-203
