- Acquire: when used in connection with a grant of power or property right to any person shall include the purchase, grant, gift, devise, bequest, and obtaining by eminent domain. See Nebraska Statutes 49-801
- Action: shall include any proceeding in any court of this state. See Nebraska Statutes 49-801
- Alcohol and drug counseling: means providing or performing the core functions of an alcohol and drug counselor for remuneration. See Nebraska Statutes 38-303
- Alcohol and drug counselor: means a person engaged in alcohol and drug counseling. See Nebraska Statutes 38-304
- Alcohol or drug abuse: means the abuse of alcohol or other drugs which have significant mood or perception changing capacities, which are likely to be physiologically or psychologically addictive, and the use of which have negative physical, social, or psychological consequences. - Alcohol or drug dependence: means cognitive, behavioral, and psychological symptoms indicating the continued use of alcohol or other drugs despite significant alcohol or drug-related problems. See Nebraska Statutes 38-306
- Alcohol or drug disorder: means a substance-related disorder as defined by the department in rules and regulations substantially similar with the definitions of the American Psychiatric Association in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. See Nebraska Statutes 38-307
- Allegation: something that someone says happened.
- Answer: The formal written statement by a defendant responding to a civil complaint and setting forth the grounds for defense.
- Attorney: shall mean attorney at law. See Nebraska Statutes 49-801
- Board: means the Board of Alcohol and Drug Counseling. See Nebraska Statutes 38-308
- Complaint: A written statement by the plaintiff stating the wrongs allegedly committed by the defendant.
- Core functions: means the following twelve activities an alcohol and drug counselor performs in the role of counselor: Screening, intake, orientation, assessment, treatment planning, counseling (individual, group, and significant others), case management, crisis intervention, client education, referral, reports and record keeping, and consultation with other professionals in regard to client treatment and services. See Nebraska Statutes 38-309
- Damages: Money paid by defendants to successful plaintiffs in civil cases to compensate the plaintiffs for their injuries.
- Defendant: In a civil suit, the person complained against; in a criminal case, the person accused of the crime.
- Jurisdiction: (1) The legal authority of a court to hear and decide a case. Concurrent jurisdiction exists when two courts have simultaneous responsibility for the same case. (2) The geographic area over which the court has authority to decide cases.
- Lease: A contract transferring the use of property or occupancy of land, space, structures, or equipment in consideration of a payment (e.g., rent). Source: OCC
- Lien: A claim against real or personal property in satisfaction of a debt.

- Process: shall mean a summons, subpoena, or notice to appear issued out of a court in the course of judicial proceedings. See Nebraska Statutes 49-801
- State: when applied to different states of the United States shall be construed to extend to and include the District of Columbia and the several territories organized by Congress. See Nebraska Statutes 49-801
- Trial: A hearing that takes place when the defendant pleads "not guilty" and witnesses are required to come to court to give evidence.
- Writ: A formal written command, issued from the court, requiring the performance of a specific act.
- Writ shall: signify an order or citation in writing issued in the name of the state out of a court or by a judicial officer. See Nebraska Statutes 49-801
- Year: shall mean calendar year. See Nebraska Statutes 49-801
