No sheriff shall be allowed to charge or receive any fee or compensation whatever for the return written upon any summons, subpoena, writ of attachment, execution, order of sale or other paper. Any sheriff violating the terms of this section shall be punished by a fine of not more than $500 and shall be removed from office.
