I. There is established in this state a home known as the New Hampshire veterans’ home for the support, care, and treatment of veterans who have served on active duty in the armed forces of the United States as defined by 38 U.S.C. § 101, or in reserve units or in the New Hampshire army or air national guard, and have been honorably discharged therefrom. Except as provided in paragraph II, the veteran shall have been a resident of the state of New Hampshire for at least one year next preceding the veteran’s application.
II. The one-year residency requirement shall be waived for the following veterans:

Terms Used In New Hampshire Revised Statutes 119:1

  • Active duty: means full-time duty as an enlisted member, or as a commissioned or warrant officer, in any branch of the armed forces. See New Hampshire Revised Statutes 21:50
  • Armed forces: means the United States Army, Army Reserve, Navy, Naval Reserve, Marine Corps, Marine Corps Reserve, Air Force, Air Force Reserve, Space Force, Coast Guard, Coast Guard Reserve, Army National Guard, and the Air National Guard. See New Hampshire Revised Statutes 21:50
  • following: when used by way of reference to any section of these laws, shall mean the section next preceding or following that in which such reference is made, unless some other is expressly designated. See New Hampshire Revised Statutes 21:13
  • state: when applied to different parts of the United States, may extend to and include the District of Columbia and the several territories, so called; and the words "United States" shall include said district and territories. See New Hampshire Revised Statutes 21:4
  • United States: shall include said district and territories. See New Hampshire Revised Statutes 21:4
  • Veteran: means any person who:
    (1) Served in the United States armed forces for more than 4 years and continues to serve; or
    (2) Has been discharged or released from duty in the United States armed forces with:
    (A) An honorable discharge; or
    (B) An uncharacterized discharge based on a service-connected injury, illness, or disability. See New Hampshire Revised Statutes 21:50

(a) A veteran whose DD214 certificate or any document used by the veterans’ home for admission states a New Hampshire address as his or her home of record upon discharge from active duty.
(b) An active duty veteran who has a New Hampshire address as his or her home of record and who is being discharged directly from a medical facility.
III. The care of veterans under this section includes nursing care, assisted living, domiciliary, day care, dementia, chemical dependency and psychiatric services, and other related services and programs for any veteran otherwise eligible for admittance. Such services and programs shall be provided at the veterans’ home or contracted through other organizations and facilities, both within and outside of New Hampshire.
