I. Any person who is ordered into or enlists in the military or naval service of the United States in connection with the strengthening of the national defense in any war emergency may make application to the department stating the fact of such service and requesting suspension of registration of any vehicle owned by him during such service. Upon receipt of such application, the department is hereby authorized to suspend registration of such vehicle for such time and to reimburse said person for a portion of the registration fees paid by him for the current year on a pro rata basis according to the number of months said vehicle is unused. Any refunds made under the provisions hereof shall be a charge upon the funds of the division. Upon the termination of such service, upon application, the department shall re-register said vehicle for the then current year upon payment of a like pro rata fee.
II. The foregoing provision shall apply to those members of the armed forces inducted or called on active duty during a period of armed hostilities as declared by the Congress and President of the United States.

- Active duty: means full-time duty as an enlisted member, or as a commissioned or warrant officer, in any branch of the armed forces. See New Hampshire Revised Statutes 21:50
- Armed forces: means the United States Army, Army Reserve, Navy, Naval Reserve, Marine Corps, Marine Corps Reserve, Air Force, Air Force Reserve, Space Force, Coast Guard, Coast Guard Reserve, Army National Guard, and the Air National Guard. See New Hampshire Revised Statutes 21:50
- Department: shall mean the department of safety of the state of New Hampshire. See New Hampshire Revised Statutes 259:19
- Division: shall mean the division of motor vehicles in the department of safety. See New Hampshire Revised Statutes 259:22
- Person: shall mean the same as provided in N. See New Hampshire Revised Statutes 259:74
- Suspension: shall mean the temporary withdrawal by formal action of the department or of a court of competent jurisdiction of a person's driver's license or privilege to drive a vehicle on the ways of this state, or any other license, registration or permit issued by the department, which temporary withdrawal shall be for a period specifically designated by the department or court and until the reissuance of the license, registration, permit or privilege.
