- Probation: A sentencing alternative to imprisonment in which the court releases convicted defendants under supervision as long as certain conditions are observed.

Probation and parole officers fully funded by the state shall be assigned or reassigned to geographical regions within the state in consonance with the duties to be accomplished. They may be assigned any duties determined appropriate by the commissioner. The commissioner shall assign probation and parole officers to each judicial district, as defined in RSA 502-A, consistent with the workload formula established by administrative rule pursuant to N.H. Rev. Stat. Chapter 541-A and available funding.
