Terms Used In New Hampshire Revised Statutes 601:7

  • Indictment: The formal charge issued by a grand jury stating that there is enough evidence that the defendant committed the crime to justify having a trial; it is used primarily for felonies.
  • justice: when applied to a magistrate, shall mean a justice of a municipal court, or a justice of the peace having jurisdiction over the subject-matter. See New Hampshire Revised Statutes 21:12
It is not necessary, in an indictment for assault and battery, to allege that any preliminary proceedings have been had in the case before a justice or district or municipal court.
