(a) Notwithstanding any other provision to the contrary, county legislative bodies or other governing bodies are authorized to provide group life, hospitalization, disability, or medical insurance for county employees.

Terms Used In Tennessee Code 8-27-401

  • board: means the board provided for in part 3 of this chapter. See Tennessee Code 8-34-101
  • Firefighter: means a person in the employ of a political subdivision participating under chapter 35, part 2 of this title who is a member of the fire department of such political subdivision, and is trained in firefighting and actively engaged in such work or subject to call for such services, providing such person's primary livelihood is derived from such work. See Tennessee Code 8-34-101
  • Member: means any person included in the membership of the retirement system, as provided in chapter 35, part 1 of this title. See Tennessee Code 8-34-101
  • Year: means a calendar year, unless otherwise expressed. See Tennessee Code 1-3-105
(b) For purposes of this part:

(1) “County employee” may include, subject to the approval of the county legislative bodies:

(A) Retired county employees, officials, and their surviving spouses. Where any county has offered such coverage prior to May 10, 1994, no further action by the legislative body shall be required; and
(B) Volunteer firefighters who have successfully completed the Tennessee commission on firefighting personnel and standard education certification exam for Firefighter I and practiced as a volunteer firefighter for at least one (1) year from the completion of such exam prior to making application for benefits pursuant to this part; and
(2) “Volunteer firefighter” means any member or personnel of a fire department, volunteer fire department, rescue squad or volunteer rescue squad, including, but not limited to, a junior member, a board member, or an auxiliary member of the department or squad.
