- Settlement: Parties to a lawsuit resolve their difference without having a trial. Settlements often involve the payment of compensation by one party in satisfaction of the other party's claims.
- State: extends to and includes any State, territory or possession of the United States, the District of Columbia and the Canal Zone. See New Jersey Statutes 1:1-2
A patient who shall have acquired a legal settlement in any county shall retain his settlement until he shall have acquired a legal settlement in some other county; but such settlement shall be deemed to have been abandoned by residence without the state for a period of one year or more.
