Terms Used In New Jersey Statutes 48:16A-4

  • Jurisdiction: (1) The legal authority of a court to hear and decide a case. Concurrent jurisdiction exists when two courts have simultaneous responsibility for the same case. (2) The geographic area over which the court has authority to decide cases.
  • Power of attorney: A written instrument which authorizes one person to act as another's agent or attorney. The power of attorney may be for a definite, specific act, or it may be general in nature. The terms of the written power of attorney may specify when it will expire. If not, the power of attorney usually expires when the person granting it dies. Source: OCC
The owner of the vehicle shall execute and deliver to the clerk of the municipality concurrently with the filing of a policy or bond referred to in sections 2 and 3 of this act, a power of attorney, wherein and whereby the owner shall appoint the chief fiscal officer of the municipality his true and lawful attorney for the purpose of acknowledging service of any process out of a court of competent jurisdiction to be served against the insured by virtue of the indemnity granted under the insurance policy or bond filed.
