Terms Used In New Jersey Statutes 56:6-10

  • Answer: The formal written statement by a defendant responding to a civil complaint and setting forth the grounds for defense.
  • person: includes corporations, companies, associations, societies, firms, partnerships and joint stock companies as well as individuals, unless restricted by the context to an individual as distinguished from a corporate entity or specifically restricted to one or some of the above enumerated synonyms and, when used to designate the owner of property which may be the subject of an offense, includes this State, the United States, any other State of the United States as defined infra and any foreign country or government lawfully owning or possessing property within this State.   • Subpoena: A command to a witness to appear and give testimony.
If a person subpoenaed to attend any hearing under this act fails to appear, be examined or answer any question or produce any books, records, papers, vouchers, accounts or documents when subpoenaed so to do by the Director of the Division of Taxation or by any employee of the Division of Taxation designated by the director, the director or such employee of the said division may apply to the Superior Court to compel the person to comply forthwith with the subpoena.
