- Active service: means state active duty in case of public disaster, riot, tumult, breach of the peace, resistance of process, or the threat thereof, whenever called in aid of civil authorities, or under martial law, or at encampments, whether ordered by state or federal authorities, and includes the performance of any other duty requiring the entire time of the organization or person, except when called or drafted into the federal service by the president of the United States. See North Dakota Code 37-01-01
- Adjutant general coin: means a coin or medallion bearing the state's adjutant general's organization insignia or emblem. See North Dakota Code 37-01-01
- Appropriation: The provision of funds, through an annual appropriations act or a permanent law, for federal agencies to make payments out of the Treasury for specified purposes. The formal federal spending process consists of two sequential steps: authorization
- children: includes children by birth and by adoption. See North Dakota Code 1-01-18
- Commissioner: means the agriculture commissioner or the designee or authorized representative of the commissioner. See North Dakota Code 4.1-01-01
- Disaster response coin: means a coin or medallion bearing a design to commemorate the response during a state disaster or emergency. See North Dakota Code 37-01-01
- following: when used by way of reference to a chapter or other part of a statute means the next preceding or next following chapter or other part. See North Dakota Code 1-01-49
- Military: means armed forces. See North Dakota Code 37-01-01
- Militia: means a group of individuals defined in the Constitution of North Dakota. See North Dakota Code 37-01-01
- National guard: means that part of the military forces of this state which is organized, equipped, and federally recognized under the provisions of the National Defense Act, as amended, of the United States as the "national guard, air national guard, of the United States and the state of North Dakota". See North Dakota Code 37-01-01
- Obligation: An order placed, contract awarded, service received, or similar transaction during a given period that will require payments during the same or a future period.
- Organization: includes a foreign or domestic association, business trust, corporation, enterprise, estate, joint venture, limited liability company, limited liability partnership, limited partnership, partnership, trust, or any legal or commercial entity. See North Dakota Code 1-01-49
- Person: means an individual, organization, government, political subdivision, or government agency or instrumentality. See North Dakota Code 1-01-49
- Property: includes property, real and personal. See North Dakota Code 1-01-49
- Real property: Land, and all immovable fixtures erected on, growing on, or affixed to the land.
- Reserve militia: consists of all those individuals who are subject to service in the active militia and who are not serving in the national guard of this state. See North Dakota Code 37-01-01
- seal: includes an impression of such seal upon the paper alone as well as upon wax or a wafer affixed thereto. See North Dakota Code 1-01-38
- State: when applied to the different parts of the United States, includes the District of Columbia and the territories. See North Dakota Code 1-01-49
- United States: includes the District of Columbia and the territories. See North Dakota Code 1-01-49
- week: means seven consecutive days and the word "month" a calendar month. See North Dakota Code 1-01-33
- year: means twelve consecutive months. See North Dakota Code 1-01-33
