All directors and officers shall be elected for two years and hold office until their successors have been elected and qualified, except that at the first election the vicepresident shall be elected as provided in § 34-31A-14 for a oneyear term, and onehalf, or as close to onehalf as possible depending upon the total number of directors, of the directors elected at the first election shall be selected by lot in the presence of a majority of such directors to serve oneyear terms. A rural fire protection district director may receive compensation for his services in an amount not to exceed forty dollars per day and may receive expenses, including traveling expenses, necessarily incurred in the discharge of his duties.
