A county with a population of seventyfive thousand or more may adopt an ordinance establishing a civil service system for its county deputy sheriffs, and provide for the appointment of a civil service board, and prescribe its powers, duties, and compensation. The civil service system shall provide for the suspension or removal of any deputy sheriff for cause, subject to review and affirmance, reversal, or modification of such action by the civil service board. The deputy sheriff may request a hearing before the board at which he may be present in person or by counsel. The ordinance may be repealed or modified by a majority vote of the county commission.
