- Convicted: includes a finding of guilt, whether or not the adjudication of guilt is stayed or executed, an unwithdrawn judicial admission of guilt or guilty plea, a no contest plea, a judgment of conviction, an adjudication as a delinquent child, or an admission to a juvenile delinquency petition. See South Dakota Codified Laws 22-48-1
- Conviction: A judgement of guilt against a criminal defendant.
- Course of criminal conduct: includes the acts or omissions of the perpetrator in carrying out the crime of which convicted or of a victim in resisting criminal conduct. See South Dakota Codified Laws 22-48-1
- Crime: includes an offense named in §. See South Dakota Codified Laws 22-48-1
- Damages: Money paid by defendants to successful plaintiffs in civil cases to compensate the plaintiffs for their injuries.
- Discovery: Lawyers' examination, before trial, of facts and documents in possession of the opponents to help the lawyers prepare for trial.
- Evidence: Information presented in testimony or in documents that is used to persuade the fact finder (judge or jury) to decide the case for one side or the other.
- Person: includes natural persons, partnerships, associations, cooperative corporations, limited liability companies, and corporations. See South Dakota Codified Laws 2-14-2
- Plea: In a criminal case, the defendant's statement pleading "guilty" or "not guilty" in answer to the charges, a declaration made in open court.
