  • Damages: Money paid by defendants to successful plaintiffs in civil cases to compensate the plaintiffs for their injuries.
  • state: when applied to the different parts of the United States, shall be construed to extend to and include the District of Columbia and the several territories belonging to the United States; and the words "United States" shall be construed to include the district and territories.      Whoever shall convert to his own use, without the consent of the owner thereof, any logs, timber, boards, or planks floating in any of the waters of this state, or lying on the banks or shores of such waters, or on any island where the same may have drifted, except as in this chapter provided for, shall be liable to the owner thereof in treble the amount of damages.
