(a) Except as provided by Subsection (b), a petition for an initial recount must be submitted by 5 p.m. of the third business day after the date the canvassing authority to whose presiding officer the petition must be submitted completes its canvass of the original election returns.

- Presiding officer: A majority-party Senator who presides over the Senate and is charged with maintaining order and decorum, recognizing Members to speak, and interpreting the Senate's rules, practices and precedents.
(b) A petition for a winning candidate in response to an opposing candidate’s petition as described by § 212.0241(b) must be submitted not later than 48 hours after receipt of the notice of approval under § 212.032.
(c) If the deadline for submitting a petition for an initial recount falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal state holiday, the deadline is extended to 10 a.m. of the next regular business day.
