(a) For purposes of this section, “sexual offense” means a criminal offense the conviction of which requires a person to register as a sex offender under Chapter 62, Code of Criminal Procedure.
(b) Before an inmate who is serving a sentence for a sexual offense is discharged or is released on parole or mandatory supervision from the department, the department shall use the dynamic risk assessment tool developed by the Council on Sex Offender Treatment under § 110.164, Occupations Code, to assign the inmate a risk level of low, medium, or high.

- Conviction: A judgement of guilt against a criminal defendant.
- Person: includes corporation, organization, government or governmental subdivision or agency, business trust, estate, trust, partnership, association, and any other legal entity. See Texas Government Code 311.005
(c) The department shall conduct the risk assessment required by this section in addition to any other risk assessment the department is required to conduct.
