(a) The board may provide for and administer retirement, disability, and death compensation funds for the employees of the district.
(b) The board may establish a public retirement system in accordance with the provisions of Chapter 810, Government Code. The board may also provide for a deferred compensation plan described by Section 457 of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 (26 U.S.C. § 457).

- Board: means the governing body of a district. See Texas Water Code 49.001
- District: means any district or authority created by authority of either Sections Texas Water Code 49.001
- Rule: includes regulation. See Texas Government Code 311.005
(c) The board may include hospitalization and medical benefits to its employees as part of the compensation paid to the officers and employees and may adopt any plan, rule, or regulation in connection with it and amend or change the plan, rule, or regulation as it may determine.
(d) The board may establish a sick leave pool for employees of the district in the same manner as that authorized for the creation of a sick leave pool for state employees by Subchapter A, Chapter 661, Government Code.
