(1) Within funds appropriated by the Legislature, the department shall provide compensation, at a standard rate determined by the department, to an overdose fatality examiner.
Terms Used In Utah Code 26B-8-231
- Decedent: A deceased person.
- Medical examiner: means the state medical examiner appointed pursuant to Section
26B-8-202 or a deputy appointed by the medical examiner. See Utah Code 26B-8-201 - Suicide: means death caused by an intentional and voluntary act of an individual who understands the physical nature of the act and intends by such act to accomplish self-destruction. See Utah Code 26B-8-201
(2) The overdose fatality examiner shall:
(2)(a) work with the medical examiner to compile data regarding overdose and opioid related deaths, including:
(2)(a)(i) toxicology information;
(2)(a)(ii) demographics; and
(2)(a)(iii) the source of opioids or drugs;
(2)(b) as relatives of the deceased are willing, gather information from relatives of the deceased regarding the circumstances of the decedent‘s death;
(2)(c) maintain a database of information described in Subsections (2)(a) and (b);
(2)(d) coordinate no less than monthly with the suicide prevention coordinator described in Section 26B-5-611; and
(2)(e) coordinate no less than quarterly with the Opioid and Overdose Fatality Review Committee created in Section 26B-1-403.
