(1) The Utah system of higher education consists of the following institutions:
Terms Used In Utah Code 53B-1-102
- Board: means the Utah Board of Higher Education described in Section 53B-1-402. See Utah Code 53B-1-101.5
- Contract: A legal written agreement that becomes binding when signed.
- State: when applied to the different parts of the United States, includes a state, district, or territory of the United States. See Utah Code 68-3-12.5
- Technical college: means an institution of higher education described in Subsection 53B-1-102(1)(b). See Utah Code 53B-1-101.5
(1)(a) degree-granting institutions, which are:
(1)(a)(i) the University of Utah;
(1)(a)(ii) Utah State University;
(1)(a)(iii) Weber State University;
(1)(a)(iv) Southern Utah University;
(1)(a)(v) Snow College;
(1)(a)(vi) Utah Tech University;
(1)(a)(vii) Utah Valley University; and
(1)(a)(viii) Salt Lake Community College;
(1)(b) technical colleges, which are:
(1)(b)(i) Bridgerland Technical College;
(1)(b)(ii) Davis Technical College;
(1)(b)(iii) Dixie Technical College;
(1)(b)(iv) Mountainland Technical College;
(1)(b)(v) Ogden-Weber Technical College;
(1)(b)(vi) Southwest Technical College;
(1)(b)(vii) Tooele Technical College; and
(1)(b)(viii) Uintah Basin Technical College;
(1)(c) the Utah Board of Higher Education; and
(1)(d) other public post-high school educational institutions as the Legislature may designate.
(2) A change in the name of an institution within the Utah system of higher education is not a change in the role or mission of the institution, unless otherwise authorized by the board.
(3) It is not the intent of the Legislature to increase the number of research universities in the state beyond the University of Utah and Utah State University.
(4) An institution or board described in Subsection (1) is empowered to sue and be sued and to contract and be contracted with.
