(1) An action for recovery of a debt may be brought within the applicable statute of limitations from the date:

- action: as used in this chapter includes counterclaims and cross-complaints and all other civil actions in which affirmative relief is sought. See Utah Code 78B-2-101
- Statute: A law passed by a legislature.
- Statute of limitations: A law that sets the time within which parties must take action to enforce their rights.
(1)(a) the debt arose;
(1)(b) a written acknowledgment of the debt or a promise to pay is made by the debtor; or
(1)(c) a payment is made on the debt by the debtor.
(2) If a right of action is barred by the provisions of any statute, it shall be unavailable either as a cause of action or ground for defense.
