- Advice and consent: Under the Constitution, presidential nominations for executive and judicial posts take effect only when confirmed by the Senate, and international treaties become effective only when the Senate approves them by a two-thirds vote.
- Appeal: A request made after a trial, asking another court (usually the court of appeals) to decide whether the trial was conducted properly. To make such a request is "to appeal" or "to take an appeal." One who appeals is called the appellant.
- Appellate: About appeals; an appellate court has the power to review the judgement of another lower court or tribunal.
- Board: means a local board of health established under Section
26A-1-109 . See Utah Code 26A-1-102 - Commission: means the Public Service Commission. See Utah Code 54-2-1
- Complaint: A written statement by the plaintiff stating the wrongs allegedly committed by the defendant.
- County governing body: means one of the types of county government provided for in Title 17, Chapter 52a, Part 2, Forms of County Government. See Utah Code 26A-1-102
- Department: means the Department of Transportation created in Section 72-1-201. See Utah Code 54-2-1
- Department: means the Department of Health and Human Services created in Section
26B-1-201 . See Utah Code 26A-1-102 - Jurisdiction: (1) The legal authority of a court to hear and decide a case. Concurrent jurisdiction exists when two courts have simultaneous responsibility for the same case. (2) The geographic area over which the court has authority to decide cases.
- Local health department: means :(6)(a) a single county local health department;(6)(b) a multicounty local health department;(6)(c) a united local health department; or(6)(d) a multicounty united local health department. See Utah Code 26A-1-102
- Mental health authority: means a local mental health authority created in Section
17-43-301 . See Utah Code 26A-1-102 - Multicounty local health department: means a local health department that is formed under Section
26A-1-105 and that serves two or more contiguous counties and municipalities within those counties. See Utah Code 26A-1-102 - Multicounty united local health department: means a united local health department that is formed under Section
Utah Code 26A-1-102 - Person: means :(24)(a) an individual;(24)(b) an association;(24)(c) an institution;(24)(d) a corporation;(24)(e) a company;(24)(f) a trust;(24)(g) a limited liability company;(24)(h) a partnership;(24)(i) a political subdivision;(24)(j) a government office, department, division, bureau, or other body of government; and(24)(k) any other organization or entity. See Utah Code 68-3-12.5
- Prosecute: To charge someone with a crime. A prosecutor tries a criminal case on behalf of the government.
- Public utility: includes every railroad corporation, gas corporation, electrical corporation, distribution electrical cooperative, wholesale electrical cooperative, telephone corporation, telegraph corporation, water corporation, sewerage corporation, heat corporation, and independent energy producer not described in Section 54-2-201 where the service is performed for, or the commodity delivered to, the public generally, or in the case of a gas corporation or electrical corporation where the gas or electricity is sold or furnished to any member or consumers within the state for domestic, commercial, or industrial use. - Quorum: The number of legislators that must be present to do business.
- State: when applied to the different parts of the United States, includes a state, district, or territory of the United States. See Utah Code 68-3-12.5
- Statute: A law passed by a legislature.
- Substance abuse authority: means a local substance abuse authority created in Section
17-43-201 . See Utah Code 26A-1-102
