- Adjourn: A motion to adjourn a legislative chamber or a committee, if passed, ends that day's session.
- Appeal: A request made after a trial, asking another court (usually the court of appeals) to decide whether the trial was conducted properly. To make such a request is "to appeal" or "to take an appeal." One who appeals is called the appellant.
- Appellate: About appeals; an appellate court has the power to review the judgement of another lower court or tribunal.
- Appropriation: The provision of funds, through an annual appropriations act or a permanent law, for federal agencies to make payments out of the Treasury for specified purposes. The formal federal spending process consists of two sequential steps: authorization
- Arrest: Taking physical custody of a person by lawful authority.
- Assets: (1) The property comprising the estate of a deceased person, or (2) the property in a trust account.
- Attachment: A procedure by which a person's property is seized to pay judgments levied by the court.
- Center: means the Washington center for deaf and hard of hearing youth serving local school districts across the state; and

Washington Code 72.20.001Deposition: An oral statement made before an officer authorized by law to administer oaths. Such statements are often taken to examine potential witnesses, to obtain discovery, or to be used later in trial. director: means the director of the Washington center for deaf and hard of hearing youth. Emergency furlough: means a specially expedited furlough granted to a resident to enable him or her to meet an emergency situation, such as the death or critical illness of a member of his or her family. See Washington Code 72.23.010 Evidence: Information presented in testimony or in documents that is used to persuade the fact finder (judge or jury) to decide the case for one side or the other. Ex officio: Literally, by virtue of one's office. Furlough: means an authorized leave of absence for an eligible resident, without any requirement that the resident be accompanied by, or be in the custody of, any law enforcement or corrections official while on such leave. See Washington Code 72.66.010 Garnishment: Generally, garnishment is a court proceeding in which a creditor asks a court to order a third party who owes money to the debtor or otherwise holds assets belonging to the debtor to turn over to the creditor any of the debtor Gift: A voluntary transfer or conveyance of property without consideration, or for less than full and adequate consideration based on fair market value. Guardian: A person legally empowered and charged with the duty of taking care of and managing the property of another person who because of age, intellect, or health, is incapable of managing his (her) own affairs. Jurisdiction: (1) The legal authority of a court to hear and decide a case. Concurrent jurisdiction exists when two courts have simultaneous responsibility for the same case. (2) The geographic area over which the court has authority to decide cases. Juror: A person who is on the jury. Lease: A contract transferring the use of property or occupancy of land, space, structures, or equipment in consideration of a payment (e.g., rent). Source: OCC Mentally ill person: means any person who, pursuant to the definitions contained in RCW 71. See Washington Code 72.23.010 Oath: A promise to tell the truth. Obligation: An order placed, contract awarded, service received, or similar transaction during a given period that will require payments during the same or a future period. Oversight: Committee review of the activities of a Federal agency or program. Partnership: A voluntary contract between two or more persons to pool some or all of their assets into a business, with the agreement that there will be a proportional sharing of profits and losses. Patient: means a person under observation, care, or treatment in a state hospital, or a person found mentally ill by the court, and not discharged from a state hospital, or other facility, to which such person had been ordered hospitalized. See Washington Code 72.23.010 person: may be construed to include the United States, this state, or any state or territory, or any public or private corporation or limited liability company, as well as an individual. See Washington Code 1.16.080 Personal property: All property that is not real property. Plaintiff: The person who files the complaint in a civil lawsuit. Prisoner: shall mean a person either male or female, convicted of a felony and sentenced by the superior court to a term of confinement and treatment in a state correctional institution under the jurisdiction of the department. See Washington Code 72.65.010 Probation: A sentencing alternative to imprisonment in which the court releases convicted defendants under supervision as long as certain conditions are observed. Quorum: The number of legislators that must be present to do business. Remainder: An interest in property that takes effect in the future at a specified time or after the occurrence of some event, such as the death of a life tenant. Resident: means a resident of the state of Washington. See Washington Code 72.23.010 Resident: means a person convicted of a felony and serving a sentence for a term of confinement in a state correctional institution or facility, or a state approved work or training release facility. See Washington Code 72.66.010 Restitution: The court-ordered payment of money by the defendant to the victim for damages caused by the criminal action. School: means the Washington state residential *school for the deaf located in Vancouver, Washington. See Washington Code 72.42.016 Secretary: means the secretary of social and health services. See Washington Code 72.20.001 Secretary: means the secretary of social and health services. See Washington Code 72.23.010 Secretary: means the secretary of corrections. See Washington Code 72.64.001 Secretary: shall mean the secretary of corrections. See Washington Code 72.65.010 Secretary: means the secretary of corrections, or his or her designee or designees. See Washington Code 72.66.010 Settlement: Parties to a lawsuit resolve their difference without having a trial. Settlements often involve the payment of compensation by one party in satisfaction of the other party's claims. State hospital: means any hospital, including a child study and treatment center, operated and maintained by the state of Washington for the care of the mentally ill. See Washington Code 72.23.010 Statute: A law passed by a legislature. Summons: Another word for subpoena used by the criminal justice system. Superintendent: means the superintendent of a state hospital. See Washington Code 72.23.010 superintendent: means superintendent of the state school for the blind. See Washington Code 72.41.015 Superintendent: shall mean the superintendent of a state correctional institution, camp or other facility now or hereafter established under the jurisdiction of the department pursuant to law. See Washington Code 72.65.010 Testimony: Evidence presented orally by witnesses during trials or before grand juries. Trial: A hearing that takes place when the defendant pleads "not guilty" and witnesses are required to come to court to give evidence. Trustee: A person or institution holding and administering property in trust. Verdict: The decision of a petit jury or a judge. violent act: means any physical assault or attempted physical assault against an employee or patient of a state hospital. See Washington Code 72.23.010 vocational education: means a planned series of learning experiences, the specific objective of which is to prepare individuals for gainful employment as semiskilled or skilled workers or technicians or subprofessionals in recognized occupations and in new and emerging occupations, but shall not mean programs the primary characteristic of which is repetitive work for the purpose of production, including the correctional industries program.
