- Appropriation: The provision of funds, through an annual appropriations act or a permanent law, for federal agencies to make payments out of the Treasury for specified purposes. The formal federal spending process consists of two sequential steps: authorization
- Public defender: Represent defendants who can't afford an attorney in criminal matters.
- State: when applied to states of the United States, includes the District of Columbia, the commonwealth of Puerto Rico and the several territories organized by Congress. See Wisconsin Statutes 990.01
Payments for services provided by the state public defender or other counsel under this chapter that are received pursuant to s. 977.07, 977.075 or 977.076 shall be deposited in the state treasury and credited to the appropriation under s. 20.550 (1) (L).
