According to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), as of 2024 15 million Americans have medical bills on their credit reports, owing more than $49 billion in total medical bills. The CFPB as well as some states have taken steps to regulate the reporting of medical debt, and abusive collection practices related to medical debt.
