For each fiscal year, the department of transportation shall allocate and transfer monies in the Arizona highway user revenue fund to the department of public safety for funding a portion of highway patrol costs in eight installments in each of the first eight months of a fiscal year that do not exceed:

- Department: means the department of transportation acting directly or through its duly authorized officers and agents. See Arizona Laws 28-101
- Fiscal year: The fiscal year is the accounting period for the government. For the federal government, this begins on October 1 and ends on September 30. The fiscal year is designated by the calendar year in which it ends; for example, fiscal year 2006 begins on October 1, 2005 and ends on September 30, 2006.
- highway: means the entire width between the boundary lines of every way if a part of the way is open to the use of the public for purposes of vehicular travel. See Arizona Laws 28-101
1. For the 1996-1997 fiscal year, seventeen million five hundred thousand dollars.
2. For the 1997-1998 fiscal year, fifteen million dollars.
3. For the 1998-1999 fiscal year, twelve million five hundred thousand dollars.
4. For the 1999-2000 fiscal year and for all subsequent fiscal years, ten million dollars.
