- Adjourn: A motion to adjourn a legislative chamber or a committee, if passed, ends that day's session.
- Allegation: something that someone says happened.
- Annuity: A periodic (usually annual) payment of a fixed sum of money for either the life of the recipient or for a fixed number of years. A series of payments under a contract from an insurance company, a trust company, or an individual. Annuity payments are made at regular intervals over a period of more than one full year.
- Answer: The formal written statement by a defendant responding to a civil complaint and setting forth the grounds for defense.
- Assets: (1) The property comprising the estate of a deceased person, or (2) the property in a trust account.
- Beneficiary: A person who is entitled to receive the benefits or proceeds of a will, trust, insurance policy, retirement plan, annuity, or other contract. Source: OCC
- board of supervisors: means the board of supervisors of the principal county. See California Water Code 36550
- Case law: The law as laid down in cases that have been decided in the decisions of the courts.
- City: includes "city and county" and "incorporated town. See California Streets and Highways Code 15
- Complaint: A written statement by the plaintiff stating the wrongs allegedly committed by the defendant.

- custody: means the legal right to custody of the child unless that right is held jointly by two or more persons, in which case "custody" means the physical custody of the child by one of the persons sharing the right to custody. See California Welfare and Institutions Code 17.1
- Dependent: A person dependent for support upon another.
- Fiduciary: A trustee, executor, or administrator.
- Gift: A voluntary transfer or conveyance of property without consideration, or for less than full and adequate consideration based on fair market value.
- Guardian: A person legally empowered and charged with the duty of taking care of and managing the property of another person who because of age, intellect, or health, is incapable of managing his (her) own affairs.
- Habeas corpus: A writ that is usually used to bring a prisoner before the court to determine the legality of his imprisonment. It may also be used to bring a person in custody before the court to give testimony, or to be prosecuted.
- highway: includes bridges, culverts, curbs, drains, and all works incidental to highway construction, improvement, and maintenance. See California Streets and Highways Code 23
- Irrevocable trust: A trust arrangement that cannot be revoked, rescinded, or repealed by the grantor.

- Oversight: Committee review of the activities of a Federal agency or program.
- parent: means the natural, adoptive, or foster parent of a pupil, a surrogate parent, a family member acting on behalf of the parent, or any person having legal authority to make educational decisions on behalf of a pupil. See California Education Code 51131
- Person: means any person, firm, partnership, association, corporation, organization, limited liability company, or business trust. See California Streets and Highways Code 19
- Personal property: All property that is not real property.
- Probable cause: A reasonable ground for belief that the offender violated a specific law.
- Probation officers: Screen applicants for pretrial release and monitor convicted offenders released under court supervision.
- Prosecute: To charge someone with a crime. A prosecutor tries a criminal case on behalf of the government.
- Pupil: includes a pupil's parent or guardian or legal counsel. See California Education Code 48925
- Restitution: The court-ordered payment of money by the defendant to the victim for damages caused by the criminal action.
- Schoolday: means a day upon which the schools of the district are in session or weekdays during the summer recess. See California Education Code 48925
- Spouse: includes "registered domestic partner" as required by §. See California Welfare and Institutions Code 12.2
- state hospital: means any hospital specified in Section 4100. See California Welfare and Institutions Code 4001
- Subdivision: means a subdivision of the section in which that term occurs unless some other section is expressly mentioned. See California Public Utilities Code 10
- Testify: Answer questions in court.
- United States: means the United States of America, and in relation to any particular matter includes the officers, agents, employees, agencies, or instrumentalities authorized to act in relation thereto. See California Water Code 20
- Writ: A formal written command, issued from the court, requiring the performance of a specific act.
