- Advocacy: means those activities undertaken on behalf of persons who are receiving or have received mental health services to protect their rights or to secure or upgrade treatment or other services to which they are entitled. See California Welfare and Institutions Code 5500
- Beneficiary: A person who is entitled to receive the benefits or proceeds of a will, trust, insurance policy, retirement plan, annuity, or other contract. Source: OCC
- bond: means a general obligation bond. See California Water Code 36551
- City: includes incorporated city, city and county, municipal corporation, municipality, town, and incorporated town. See California Revenue and Taxation Code 14
- City: includes "city and county" and "incorporated town. See California Streets and Highways Code 15
- client: means a person who is receiving or has received services from a mental health facility, service, or program and who has personally or through a guardian ad litem, entered into an agreement with a county patients' rights advocate for the provision of advocacy services. See California Welfare and Institutions Code 5500
- Controller: means the State Controller. See California Revenue and Taxation Code 21
- County: includes city and county. See California Revenue and Taxation Code 15

- County: includes city and county. See California Water Code 14

- Department: means the Department of Transportation of this state. See California Streets and Highways Code 20
- Eligible county: means a county that meets both of the following requirements:

- Fiduciary: A trustee, executor, or administrator.
- Guardian: A person legally empowered and charged with the duty of taking care of and managing the property of another person who because of age, intellect, or health, is incapable of managing his (her) own affairs.
- Indemnification: In general, a collateral contract or assurance under which one person agrees to secure another person against either anticipated financial losses or potential adverse legal consequences. Source: FDIC
- maintenance: includes any of the following:

- Person: means any person, firm, partnership, association, corporation, organization, limited liability company, or business trust. See California Streets and Highways Code 19

- Probable cause: A reasonable ground for belief that the offender violated a specific law.
- Public defender: Represent defendants who can't afford an attorney in criminal matters.

- Redemption amount: means the total amount which would be necessary to redeem the property from sale for delinquent assessments at the time election is made to pay delinquent assessments in installments under this chapter. See California Water Code 37176
- State: means the State of California, unless applied to the different parts of the United States. See California Water Code 18
- Statute of limitations: A law that sets the time within which parties must take action to enforce their rights.
- Subdivision: means a subdivision of the section in which that term occurs unless some other section is expressly mentioned. See California Water Code 10
- United States: means the United States of America, and in relation to any particular matter includes the officers, agents, employees, agencies, or instrumentalities authorized to act in relation thereto. See California Water Code 20
- Uphold: The decision of an appellate court not to reverse a lower court decision.
- Voice vote: A vote in which the Presiding Officer states the question, then asks those in favor and against to say "Yea" or "Nay," respectively, and announces the result according to his or her judgment. The names or numbers of legisators voting on each side are not recorded.
