- another: may extend and be applied to communities, companies, corporations, public or private, limited liability companies, societies and associations. See Connecticut General Statutes 1-1
- Appeal: A request made after a trial, asking another court (usually the court of appeals) to decide whether the trial was conducted properly. To make such a request is "to appeal" or "to take an appeal." One who appeals is called the appellant.
- Assets: (1) The property comprising the estate of a deceased person, or (2) the property in a trust account.
- Certificate: means a certificate of registration issued under section 20-422. See Connecticut General Statutes 20-419
- Commissioner: means the Commissioner of Consumer Protection or any person designated by the commissioner to administer and enforce this chapter. See Connecticut General Statutes 20-419
- Commissioner: means the Commissioner of Public Health. See Connecticut General Statutes 20-408
- Complaint: A written statement by the plaintiff stating the wrongs allegedly committed by the defendant.
- Contract: A legal written agreement that becomes binding when signed.
- Contractor: means any person who owns and operates a home improvement business or who undertakes, offers to undertake or agrees to perform any home improvement. See Connecticut General Statutes 20-419
- Corporation: A legal entity owned by the holders of shares of stock that have been issued, and that can own, receive, and transfer property, and carry on business in its own name.
- Damages: Money paid by defendants to successful plaintiffs in civil cases to compensate the plaintiffs for their injuries.
- Department: means the Department of Public Health. See Connecticut General Statutes 20-408
- Evidence: Information presented in testimony or in documents that is used to persuade the fact finder (judge or jury) to decide the case for one side or the other.
- Finance charge: The total cost of credit a customer must pay on a consumer loan, including interest. The Truth in Lending Act requires disclosure of the finance charge. Source: OCC
- Fraud: Intentional deception resulting in injury to another.
- Home improvement: includes , but is not limited to, the repair, replacement, remodeling, alteration, conversion, modernization, improvement, rehabilitation or sandblasting of, or addition to any land or building or that portion thereof which is used or designed to be used as a private residence, dwelling place or residential rental property, or the construction, replacement, installation or improvement of alarm systems not requiring electrical work, as defined in section 20-330, driveways, swimming pools, porches, garages, roofs, siding, insulation, sunrooms, flooring, patios, landscaping, fences, doors and windows, waterproofing, water, fire or storm restoration or mold remediation in connection with such land or building or that portion thereof which is used or designed to be used as a private residence, dwelling place or residential rental property or the removal or replacement of a residential underground heating oil storage tank system, in which the total price for all work agreed upon between the contractor and owner or proposed or offered by the contractor exceeds two hundred dollars. - Home improvement contract: means an agreement between a contractor and an owner for the performance of a home improvement. See Connecticut General Statutes 20-419
- Licensed speech and language pathologist: means a person licensed under this chapter to practice speech and language pathology. See Connecticut General Statutes 20-408
- Minority leader: See Floor Leaders
- month: means a calendar month, and the word "year" means a calendar year, unless otherwise expressed. See Connecticut General Statutes 1-1
- Obligation: An order placed, contract awarded, service received, or similar transaction during a given period that will require payments during the same or a future period.
- Owner: means a person who owns or resides in a private residence and includes any agent thereof, including, but not limited to, a condominium association. See Connecticut General Statutes 20-419
- Partnership: A voluntary contract between two or more persons to pool some or all of their assets into a business, with the agreement that there will be a proportional sharing of profits and losses.
- Person: means an individual, partnership, limited liability company or corporation. See Connecticut General Statutes 20-419
- Personal property: All property that is not real property.
- practice of speech and language pathology: means the application of principles, methods and procedures for the measurement, testing, diagnosis, prediction, counseling or instruction relating to the development and disorders of speech, voice or language or feeding and swallowing or other upper aerodigestive functions for the purpose of diagnosing, preventing, treating, ameliorating or modifying such disorders and conditions in individuals or groups of individuals, and includes screening individuals for hearing loss or middle ear pathology using otoacoustic emissions screening, screening tympanometry or conventional pure-tone air conduction methods, including otoscopic inspection. - President pro tempore: A constitutionally recognized officer of the Senate who presides over the chamber in the absence of the Vice President. The President Pro Tempore (or, "president for a time") is elected by the Senate and is, by custom, the Senator of the majority party with the longest record of continuous service.
- Private residence: means a single family dwelling, a multifamily dwelling consisting of not more than six units, or a unit, common element or limited common element in a condominium, as defined in section 47-68a, or in a common interest community, as defined in section 47-202, or any number of condominium units for which a condominium association acts as an agent for such unit owners. See Connecticut General Statutes 20-419
- Probation: A sentencing alternative to imprisonment in which the court releases convicted defendants under supervision as long as certain conditions are observed.
- Real property: Land, and all immovable fixtures erected on, growing on, or affixed to the land.
- Recourse: An arrangement in which a bank retains, in form or in substance, any credit risk directly or indirectly associated with an asset it has sold (in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles) that exceeds a pro rata share of the bank's claim on the asset. If a bank has no claim on an asset it has sold, then the retention of any credit risk is recourse. Source: FDIC
- Residential rental property: means a single family dwelling, a multifamily dwelling consisting of not more than six units, or a unit, common element or limited common element in a condominium, as defined in section 47-68a, or in a common interest community, as defined in section 47-202, which is not owner-occupied. - Residential underground heating oil storage tank system: means an underground storage tank system used with or without ancillary components in connection with real property composed of four or less residential units. See Connecticut General Statutes 20-419
- Restitution: The court-ordered payment of money by the defendant to the victim for damages caused by the criminal action.
- Salesman: means any individual who (A) negotiates or offers to negotiate a home improvement contract with an owner, or (B) solicits or otherwise endeavors to procure by any means whatsoever, directly or indirectly, a home improvement contract from an owner on behalf of a contractor. - Service of process: The service of writs or summonses to the appropriate party.
- Speech and language pathologist: includes an individual who engages in the practice of speech and language pathology under any title or description of service incorporating the words speech pathologist, speech pathology, speech therapist, speech therapy, speech correction, speech correctionist, speech clinician, language pathologist, language pathology, aphasiologist, aphasia therapist, voice therapy, voice therapist, voice pathologist, phoniatrist, communication disorder specialist, communication specialist or any similar titles or description of services. - Testify: Answer questions in court.
- Testimony: Evidence presented orally by witnesses during trials or before grand juries.
- Underground storage tank system: means an underground tank or combination of tanks, with any underground pipes or ancillary equipment or containment systems connected to such tank or tanks, used to contain an accumulation of petroleum, which volume is ten per cent or more beneath the surface of the ground. - Writ: A formal written command, issued from the court, requiring the performance of a specific act.
