Terms Used In Iowa Code 411.16
- cities: means any city or cities participating in the statewide fire and police retirement system as required by this chapter. See Iowa Code 411.1
- fire fighters: shall mean only the members of a fire department who have passed a regular mental and physical civil service examination for fire fighters and who shall have been duly appointed to such position. See Iowa Code 411.1
- month: means a calendar month, and the word "year" and the abbreviation "A. See Iowa Code 4.1
- Person: means an individual, firm, partnership, domestic or foreign corporation, company, association or joint stock association, trust, or other legal entity, and includes a trustee, receiver, assignee, or similar representative thereof, but does not include a governmental body. See Iowa Code 362.2
- week: means seven consecutive days. See Iowa Code 4.1
Fire fighters employed in the fire department of cities of ten thousand population or more, or under civil service, shall not be required to remain on duty for periods of time which will aggregate in each month more than an average of fifty-six hours per week and no single period of time, or shift, shall exceed twenty-four hours in length, provided that in cases of serious emergencies such fire fighters may be required to remain on duty until such emergency has passed, when so ordered by the chief of the department or person acting in the chief’s place. Fire fighters called back to duty under this provision shall be duly compensated in accordance with their regular hourly wage.
