- Accused person: means a person, corporation or other legal entity accused by a complaint of the violation of a city ordinance. See Kansas Statutes 12-4113
- Answer: The formal written statement by a defendant responding to a civil complaint and setting forth the grounds for defense.
- Appearance bond: means an undertaking, with or without security, entered into by a person in custody by which the person is bound to comply with the conditions of the undertaking. See Kansas Statutes 12-4113
- Arrest: Taking physical custody of a person by lawful authority.
- Arrest: means the taking of a person into custody in order that the person will appear to answer for the violation of an ordinance. See Kansas Statutes 12-4113
- Beneficiary: A person who is entitled to receive the benefits or proceeds of a will, trust, insurance policy, retirement plan, annuity, or other contract. Source: OCC
- City attorney: means any attorney who represents the city in the prosecution of an accused person for the violation of a city ordinance. See Kansas Statutes 12-4113
- Complaint: A written statement by the plaintiff stating the wrongs allegedly committed by the defendant.
- Complaint: means a sworn written statement, or a written statement by a law enforcement officer, of the essential facts constituting a violation of an ordinance. See Kansas Statutes 12-4113
- Contract: A legal written agreement that becomes binding when signed.
- Corporation: A legal entity owned by the holders of shares of stock that have been issued, and that can own, receive, and transfer property, and carry on business in its own name.
- Custody: means the restraint of a person pursuant to an arrest. See Kansas Statutes 12-4113
- Defendant: In a civil suit, the person complained against; in a criminal case, the person accused of the crime.
- Detention: means the temporary restraint of a person by a law enforcement officer. See Kansas Statutes 12-4113
- Docket: A log containing brief entries of court proceedings.
- Jurisdiction: (1) The legal authority of a court to hear and decide a case. Concurrent jurisdiction exists when two courts have simultaneous responsibility for the same case. (2) The geographic area over which the court has authority to decide cases.
- Law enforcement officer: means any person who by virtue of office or public employment is vested by law with a duty to maintain public order and to make arrests for violation of the laws of the state of Kansas or ordinances of any municipality thereof. See Kansas Statutes 12-4113
- Lien: A claim against real or personal property in satisfaction of a debt.
- Month: means a calendar month, unless otherwise expressed. See Kansas Statutes 77-201
- Notice to appear: is a written notice to a person accused by a complaint of having violated an ordinance of a city to appear at a stated time and place to answer to the charge of the complaint. See Kansas Statutes 12-4113
- Plea: In a criminal case, the defendant's statement pleading "guilty" or "not guilty" in answer to the charges, a declaration made in open court.
- Probation: A sentencing alternative to imprisonment in which the court releases convicted defendants under supervision as long as certain conditions are observed.
- Prosecute: To charge someone with a crime. A prosecutor tries a criminal case on behalf of the government.
- Remainder: An interest in property that takes effect in the future at a specified time or after the occurrence of some event, such as the death of a life tenant.
- Restitution: The court-ordered payment of money by the defendant to the victim for damages caused by the criminal action.
- State: when applied to the different parts of the United States, includes the District of Columbia and the territories. See Kansas Statutes 77-201
- Statute: A law passed by a legislature.
- Testimony: Evidence presented orally by witnesses during trials or before grand juries.
- Trial: A hearing that takes place when the defendant pleads "not guilty" and witnesses are required to come to court to give evidence.
- Undertaking: means a promise or security in any form where required by law. See Kansas Statutes 77-201
