- Adult: means a person who has attained the age of 18 years. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 1 Sec. 72
- Agent: means any person who sells or distributes potatoes or rotation crops in commerce for or on behalf of producers or others and whose operations may include the planting, cultivating, harvesting, grading, packing and furnishing containers, supplies or other services. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 7 Sec. 1012
- Agricultural products: include floricultural, horticultural, viticultural, forestry, nut, dairy, livestock, poultry, bee and any farm products. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 13 Sec. 1774
- Amendment: A proposal to alter the text of a pending bill or other measure by striking out some of it, by inserting new language, or both. Before an amendment becomes part of the measure, thelegislature must agree to it.
- an event the result of which is determined by chance: includes but is not limited to a shuffle of a deck or decks of cards, a roll of a die or dice or a random drawing or generation of an object or objects that may include, but are not limited to, a card or cards, a die or dice, a number or numbers or simulations of any of these. - Answer: The formal written statement by a defendant responding to a civil complaint and setting forth the grounds for defense.
- Appeal: A request made after a trial, asking another court (usually the court of appeals) to decide whether the trial was conducted properly. To make such a request is "to appeal" or "to take an appeal." One who appeals is called the appellant.
- Applicant: means any person applying for a license under this Article. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 7 Sec. 1012
- Appraisal: A determination of property value.
- Appropriation: The provision of funds, through an annual appropriations act or a permanent law, for federal agencies to make payments out of the Treasury for specified purposes. The formal federal spending process consists of two sequential steps: authorization
- Arrest: Taking physical custody of a person by lawful authority.
- Assets: (1) The property comprising the estate of a deceased person, or (2) the property in a trust account.
- Association: means a corporation organized under this subchapter, or a similar domestic corporation, or a foreign association or corporation if authorized to do business in this State, organized under any general or special Act as a cooperative association for the mutual benefit of its members, as agricultural producers, and which confines its operations to purposes authorized by this subchapter and restricts the return on the stock or membership capital and the amount of its business with nonmembers to the limits placed thereon by this subchapter for associations organized hereunder. - Attachment: A procedure by which a person's property is seized to pay judgments levied by the court.
- Authorized inspector: means a person holding a license to inspect boilers and pressure vessels within this State issued under section 15120. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 32 Sec. 15101
- Bankruptcy: Refers to statutes and judicial proceedings involving persons or businesses that cannot pay their debts and seek the assistance of the court in getting a fresh start. Under the protection of the bankruptcy court, debtors may discharge their debts, perhaps by paying a portion of each debt. Bankruptcy judges preside over these proceedings.
- Baseline: Projection of the receipts, outlays, and other budget amounts that would ensue in the future without any change in existing policy. Baseline projections are used to gauge the extent to which proposed legislation, if enacted into law, would alter current spending and revenue levels.
- Beneficiary: A person who is entitled to receive the benefits or proceeds of a will, trust, insurance policy, retirement plan, annuity, or other contract. Source: OCC
- Benefit: means any payment made, or required to be made, to a beneficiary under chapter 423, subchapter V or chapter 425, subchapter V. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 5 Sec. 17001
- Board: means the Maine Agricultural Bargaining Board provided for in this Article. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 13 Sec. 1955
- Bookmaking: means advancing gambling activity by unlawfully accepting bets from members of the public as a business, rather than in a casual or personal fashion, upon the outcomes of future contingent events. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 17-A Sec. 952
- Broker: means any person engaged in the business of negotiating sales of potatoes in commerce for or on behalf of the seller or the purchaser, respectively. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 7 Sec. 1012
- Buyer: means any person other than a consumer who purchases or contracts to purchase potatoes or rotation crops. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 7 Sec. 1012
- Bylaws: means those bylaws adopted by the interstate commission pursuant to section 18512 for its governance or for directing and controlling its actions and conduct. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 32 Sec. 18503
- Cable television system: means any facility that, in whole or in part, receives directly or indirectly over the air, amplifies or otherwise modifies the signals transmitting programs broadcast by one or more television or radio stations and distributes those signals by wire or cable to subscribing members of the public who pay for that service. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 30-A Sec. 2001
- Chief inspector: means the Chief Inspector of Boilers and Pressure Vessels approved under section 15106. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 32 Sec. 15101
- Chief inspector: means an individual in the employ of the State whose duties include the examination and inspection of elevators and tramways and who has been designated as chief inspector by the Commissioner of Professional and Financial Regulation. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 32 Sec. 15202
- Code: means the boiler and pressure vessel code of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and amendments and interpretations made and approved by the council of the society. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 32 Sec. 15101
- commerce: shall include the advertising, offering for sale, sale or distribution of any services and any property, tangible or intangible, real, personal or mixed, and any other article, commodity or thing of value wherever situate, and shall include any trade or commerce directly or indirectly affecting the people of this State. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 5 Sec. 206
- Commissioner: means the Commissioner of Professional and Financial Regulation. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 32 Sec. 15202
- Commissioner: means the voting representative appointed by a member board pursuant to section 18512. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 32 Sec. 18503
- Commissioner: means the Commissioner of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 12 Sec. 1801
- Complaint: A written statement by the plaintiff stating the wrongs allegedly committed by the defendant.
- Construction hoist: means a hoist that is not an integral part of a building or structure; is installed inside or outside the building or structure during the construction, alteration or demolition of the building or structure; and is used to raise and lower workers, other personnel and materials. - Construction hoist operator: means a person who operates or is responsible for the operation of a construction hoist. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 32 Sec. 15202
- Contest of chance: means any game, contest, scheme or device in which:

Conviction: A judgement of guilt against a criminal defendant. Conviction: means a finding by a court that an individual is guilty of a criminal offense through adjudication or entry of a plea of guilty or no contest to the charge by the offender. In English legal history, the courts of "law" could order the payment of damages and could afford no other remedy. See damages. A separate court of "equity" could order someone to do something or to cease to do something. See, e.g., injunction. In American jurisprudence, the federal courts have both legal and equitable power, but the distinction is still an important one. For example, a trial by jury is normally available in "law" cases but not in "equity" cases. Expedited license: means a full and unrestricted medical license granted by a member state to an eligible physician through the process set forth in the compact. Federal Government: means the United States of America or any agency or instrumentality, corporate or otherwise, of the United States of America. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 30-A Sec. 2001 Fee simple: Absolute title to property with no limitations or restrictions regarding the person who may inherit it. Fiduciary: A trustee, executor, or administrator. Fiscal year: The fiscal year is the accounting period for the government. For the federal government, this begins on October 1 and ends on September 30. The fiscal year is designated by the calendar year in which it ends; for example, fiscal year 2006 begins on October 1, 2005 and ends on September 30, 2006. Foreclosure: A legal process in which property that is collateral or security for a loan may be sold to help repay the loan when the loan is in default. Gambling device: means any device, machine, paraphernalia or equipment that is used or usable in the playing phases of any gambling activity, whether that activity consists of gambling between persons or gambling by a person involving the playing of a machine.
