As used in this subchapter, unless the context otherwise indicates, the following terms have the following meanings: [PL 1985, c. 112, §1 (AMD).]
1. Employee. “Employee” means every person who may be permitted, required or directed by any employer in consideration of direct or indirect gain or profit, to engage in any employment;

Terms Used In Maine Revised Statutes Title 26 Sec. 591

  • Bankruptcy: Refers to statutes and judicial proceedings involving persons or businesses that cannot pay their debts and seek the assistance of the court in getting a fresh start. Under the protection of the bankruptcy court, debtors may discharge their debts, perhaps by paying a portion of each debt. Bankruptcy judges preside over these proceedings.
  • Corporation: A legal entity owned by the holders of shares of stock that have been issued, and that can own, receive, and transfer property, and carry on business in its own name.
  • Employee: means every person who may be permitted, required or directed by any employer in consideration of direct or indirect gain or profit, to engage in any employment;

  • Employer: means an individual, partnership, association, corporation, legal representative, trustee, receiver, trustee in bankruptcy and any common carrier by rail, motor, water, air or express company doing business in or operating within the State; and

  • Independent contractor: means an individual who qualifies as an independent contractor under section 1043, subsection 11, paragraph E. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 26 Sec. 591
  • Partnership: A voluntary contract between two or more persons to pool some or all of their assets into a business, with the agreement that there will be a proportional sharing of profits and losses.
  • Trustee: A person or institution holding and administering property in trust.
