Terms Used In Maine Revised Statutes Title 36 Sec. 502
- Liabilities: The aggregate of all debts and other legal obligations of a particular person or legal entity.
- Municipality: shall include cities, towns and plantations. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 36 Sec. 501
- Notice: means written notification served personally, sent by certified mail or sent by first-class mail to the last known address of the person for whom the notification is intended. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 36 Sec. 111
- Personal property: All property that is not real property.
- Property: shall be construed to mean both real estate and personal property. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 36 Sec. 501
- Real estate: includes lands and all tenements and hereditaments connected therewith, and all rights thereto and interests therein. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 1 Sec. 72
- Real property: Land, and all immovable fixtures erected on, growing on, or affixed to the land.
- Tax: means the total amount required to be paid, withheld and paid over or collected and paid over with respect to estimated or actual tax liability under this Title, any credit or reimbursement allowed or paid pursuant to this Title that is recoverable by the assessor and any amount assessed by the assessor pursuant to this Title, including any interest or penalties provided by law. - Year: means a calendar year, unless otherwise expressed. See Maine Revised Statutes Title 1 Sec. 72
All real estate within the State, all personal property of residents of the State and all personal property within the State of persons not residents of the State is subject to taxation on the first day of each April as provided; and the status of all taxpayers and of such taxable property must be fixed as of that date. Upon receipt of a declaration of value under section 4641?D reflecting a change of ownership in real property, the assessor may change the records of the municipality to reflect the identity of the new owner, if notice of tax liabilities is sent both to the new owner and to the owner of record as of the April 1st when the liability accrued. The taxable year is from April 1st to April 1st. Notwithstanding this section, proration of taxes must be over the period specified in section 558. [PL 1997, c. 216, §1 (AMD).]
