Terms Used In New Jersey Statutes > Title 34 > Chapter 16

  • Amendment: A proposal to alter the text of a pending bill or other measure by striking out some of it, by inserting new language, or both. Before an amendment becomes part of the measure, thelegislature must agree to it.
  • Contract: A legal written agreement that becomes binding when signed.
  • Corporation: A legal entity owned by the holders of shares of stock that have been issued, and that can own, receive, and transfer property, and carry on business in its own name.

  • Division: means the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation Services in the Department of Labor and Workforce Development, for the rehabilitation of persons with disabilities. See New Jersey Statutes 34:16-20
  • Ex officio: Literally, by virtue of one's office.
  • Gainful employment: includes employment in the competitive labor market. See New Jersey Statutes 34:16-20
  • Gift: A voluntary transfer or conveyance of property without consideration, or for less than full and adequate consideration based on fair market value.
  • Independent living status: means that degree of independence for individuals with severe disabilities which will eliminate the need for institutional care or nursing home care or eliminate or substantially reduce the need for an attendant's care at home and which may in many instances make such persons capable of achieving vocational rehabilitation.   • Maintenance: means payments to cover the basic living expenses of a person with a disability, such as: food, shelter, clothing, health maintenance, and other subsistence expenses essential to achievement of the individual's vocational rehabilitation or independent living rehabilitation objective. See New Jersey Statutes 34:16-20
  • person: includes corporations, companies, associations, societies, firms, partnerships and joint stock companies as well as individuals, unless restricted by the context to an individual as distinguished from a corporate entity or specifically restricted to one or some of the above enumerated synonyms and, when used to designate the owner of property which may be the subject of an offense, includes this State, the United States, any other State of the United States as defined infra and any foreign country or government lawfully owning or possessing property within this State.   • Remainder: An interest in property that takes effect in the future at a specified time or after the occurrence of some event, such as the death of a life tenant.
  • State: extends to and includes any State, territory or possession of the United States, the District of Columbia and the Canal Zone. See New Jersey Statutes 1:1-2
  • Statute: A law passed by a legislature.
  • Vocational rehabilitation services: means diagnostic and related services (including transportation) incidental to the determination of eligibility for and the nature and scope of services to be provided. See New Jersey Statutes 34:16-20
  • Workshop: means a place where any manufacture or handiwork is carried on, and which is operated for the primary purpose of providing gainful employment to individuals with disabilities (1) as an interim step in the rehabilitation process for those who cannot be readily absorbed in the competitive labor market.
