Rhode Island General Laws 31-1-18. Resident and nonresident
(a) “Nonresident” means any person who is not a resident of this state or is temporarily residing in this state as a student or as a member of the armed forces of the United States.
Terms Used In Rhode Island General Laws 31-1-18
- person: may be construed to extend to and include co-partnerships and bodies corporate and politic. See Rhode Island General Laws 43-3-6
- real estate: may be construed to include lands, tenements, and hereditaments and rights thereto and interests therein. See Rhode Island General Laws 43-3-10
- United States: include the several states and the territories of the United States. See Rhode Island General Laws 43-3-8
(b) “Resident” means a person:
(1) Who owns, rents, or leases real estate within the state as his or her residence and:
(i) Engages in a trade, business, or profession in this state; or
(ii) Enrolls his or her children in a school in this state for a period exceeding ninety (90) days; or
(2) Who is registered to vote or is eligible to register to vote under the laws of this state.
