(a)  The administrator of the division of motor vehicles shall, upon approved application, issue annually to any member of any duly incorporated volunteer fire company in this state, so long as he or she remains a member of the volunteer fire company, a special identifying number plate which shall be attached to the motor vehicle of the member of the volunteer fire company in conjunction with the regular number plates assigned to the member of the fire company at the time of the registration of the vehicle. There shall be a one time charge of ten dollars ($10.00) for these special number plates, of which five dollars ($5.00) shall be deposited to the division of motor vehicles manufacturing account. The member of the volunteer fire company shall attach and display the special identifying number plate in accordance with such rules and regulations as the administrator of the division of motor vehicles shall promulgate.

(b)  The design of the plates shall be provided by the Rhode Island Association of Fire Chiefs, and shall be approved by the administrator of the division of motor vehicles.

(c)  Every plate issued shall bear an individual number to identify the vehicle to which it is attached. The administrator of the division of motor vehicles is empowered to promulgate any rules and regulations that are required in determining the manner by which the individual numbers will be selected and issued.
