Rhode Island General Laws 31-32-5. Suspension until proof furnished
The suspension or revocation required under § 31-32-4(a), (b), and (c)(1) shall remain in effect and the division of motor vehicles shall not issue to that person any new or renewal of license, or register or reregister in the name of the person as owner of the vehicle until permitted under the motor vehicle laws of this state, and only if the person shall give and maintain proof of financial responsibility for the future; provided, that for a suspension under § 31-32-4(c)(2) the division of motor vehicles shall in its discretion issue or renew a license of the person without maintaining proof of financial responsibility for the future.

- person: may be construed to extend to and include co-partnerships and bodies corporate and politic. See Rhode Island General Laws 43-3-6
- proof: is synonymous with the term "proof of financial responsibility for the future". See Rhode Island General Laws 31-32-2
- Proof of financial responsibility for the future: as used in this chapter , means proof of ability to respond in damages for liability, on account of accidents occurring subsequent to the effective date of the proof, arising out of the ownership, maintenance, or use of a vehicle of a type subject to registration under the laws of this state, in the amount of twenty-five thousand dollars ($25,000) because of bodily injury to or death of one person in any one accident, and, subject to the limit for one person, in the amount of fifty thousand dollars ($50,000) because of bodily injury to or death of two (2) or more persons in any one accident, and in the amount of twenty-five thousand dollars ($25,000) because of injury to or destruction of property of others in any one accident or seventy-five thousand dollars ($75,000) combined single limit.
