Terms Used In Rhode Island General Laws > Chapter 5-6 - Electricians

  • Additional facility: means any bridge, approach or feeder road, highway, road, freeway, tunnel, overpass, underpass, parking facility or toll facility, in the state, equipment or signal and information system, which the authority is authorized by this chapter or any other law to construct, reconstruct, renovate, acquire, maintain, repair, operate, or manage after May 3, 1954 or any portion thereof. See Rhode Island General Laws 24-12-1
  • Advice and consent: Under the Constitution, presidential nominations for executive and judicial posts take effect only when confirmed by the Senate, and international treaties become effective only when the Senate approves them by a two-thirds vote.
  • Affidavit: A written statement of facts confirmed by the oath of the party making it, before a notary or officer having authority to administer oaths.
  • Affiliate: means any person or company who or that directly or indirectly controls or is controlled by or is under direct or indirect common control of another company or person including, but not limited to, any company that is merged or consolidated, or that purchases all or substantially all of the assets of another company. See Rhode Island General Laws 23-99-3
  • Affirmed: In the practice of the appellate courts, the decree or order is declared valid and will stand as rendered in the lower court.
  • Amendment: A proposal to alter the text of a pending bill or other measure by striking out some of it, by inserting new language, or both. Before an amendment becomes part of the measure, thelegislature must agree to it.
  • Anatomical gift: means a donation of all or part of a human body to take effect after the donor's death for the purpose of transplantation or transfusion. See Rhode Island General Laws 23-95-3
  • Answer: The formal written statement by a defendant responding to a civil complaint and setting forth the grounds for defense.
  • Appeal: A request made after a trial, asking another court (usually the court of appeals) to decide whether the trial was conducted properly. To make such a request is "to appeal" or "to take an appeal." One who appeals is called the appellant.
  • Appraisal: A determination of property value.
  • Appropriation: The provision of funds, through an annual appropriations act or a permanent law, for federal agencies to make payments out of the Treasury for specified purposes. The formal federal spending process consists of two sequential steps: authorization
  • Arrest: Taking physical custody of a person by lawful authority.
  • Assessment mechanism: means automated or virtual equipment, application, or technology designed to be used on a telephone, a computer, or an internet-accessible device that may be used either in person or remotely to conduct an eye assessment, and includes artificial intelligence devices and any equipment, electronic or nonelectronic, that is used to perform an eye assessment. See Rhode Island General Laws 23-97-2
  • Assets: (1) The property comprising the estate of a deceased person, or (2) the property in a trust account.
  • Authority: means the Rhode Island turnpike and bridge authority created by § 24-12-2, or, if the authority shall be abolished, the board, body, or commission succeeding to the principal functions thereof or upon whom the powers given by the chapter to the authority shall be given by law. See Rhode Island General Laws 24-12-1
  • Auxiliary aids or services: means an aid or service that is used to provide information to an individual with a cognitive, developmental, intellectual, neurological, or physical disability and is available in a format or manner that allows the individual to better understand the information. See Rhode Island General Laws 23-95-3
  • Board: means the board of directors of the hub. See Rhode Island General Laws 23-99-3
  • Board: means the scenic roadways board. See Rhode Island General Laws 24-15-2
  • Brand: means a name, symbol, word or mark that attributes a mattress to the producer of such mattress. See Rhode Island General Laws 23-90-3
  • bridge: as used in this chapter shall be a structure including supports erected over a depression or an obstruction, such as water, highway, or railway, and having a track or passageway for carrying traffic or other moving loads, and having an opening measured along the center of the roadway of eight feet (8?) or more between under copings of abutments, spring lines of arches, or the extreme ends of openings for multiple boxes; it also includes single or multiple pipes where the clear distance between openings of multiple pipes is less than half of the smaller contiguous opening.   • Certification proposal: means a written proposal submitted by a life science company for approval as a certified life sciences company. See Rhode Island General Laws 23-99-3
  • Certified life sciences company: means a company that has been certified by the board as being eligible to receive grants and incentives from the investment fund. See Rhode Island General Laws 23-99-3
  • Chambers: A judge's office.
  • Commerce corporation: means the Rhode Island commerce corporation, established pursuant to § 42-64-1 et seq. See Rhode Island General Laws 23-99-3
  • Common law: The legal system that originated in England and is now in use in the United States. It is based on judicial decisions rather than legislative action.
  • Company: means a business corporation, partnership, firm, unincorporated association, or other entity engaged or proposing to engage in economic activity within the state, and any affiliate thereof. See Rhode Island General Laws 23-99-3
  • Complaint: A written statement by the plaintiff stating the wrongs allegedly committed by the defendant.
  • Consumer: means an individual who is also a resident of this state. See Rhode Island General Laws 23-90-3
  • Contact lens: means any lens placed directly on the surface of the eye, regardless of whether or not it is intended to correct a visual defect, including any cosmetic, therapeutic, or corrective lens. See Rhode Island General Laws 23-97-2
  • Continuance: Putting off of a hearing ot trial until a later time.
  • Contract: A legal written agreement that becomes binding when signed.
  • Conversion therapy: means any practices or treatments that seek to change an individual's sexual orientation or gender identity, including efforts to change behaviors or gender expressions or to eliminate or reduce sexual or romantic attractions or feelings toward individuals of the same gender. See Rhode Island General Laws 23-94-2
  • Conviction: A judgement of guilt against a criminal defendant.
  • Corporation: A legal entity owned by the holders of shares of stock that have been issued, and that can own, receive, and transfer property, and carry on business in its own name.
  • Corporation: means the Rhode Island Resource Recovery Corporation. See Rhode Island General Laws 23-90-3
  • Corporation Director: means the executive director of the Rhode Island Resource Recovery Corporation. See Rhode Island General Laws 23-90-3
  • council: means the organization created by producers to design, submit, and implement the mattress stewardship program described in § 23-90-5. See Rhode Island General Laws 23-90-3
  • Covered entity: means any political subdivision of the state, any mattress retailer, any permitted transfer station, any waste to energy facility, any healthcare facility, any educational facility, any correctional facility, any military base, or any commercial or non profit lodging establishment that possesses a discarded mattress that was discarded in this state. See Rhode Island General Laws 23-90-3
  • Covered entity: means :

    (i)  Any licensed provider of healthcare services, including licensed healthcare practitioners, hospitals, nursing facilities, laboratories, intermediate care facilities, psychiatric residential treatment facilities, institutions for individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities, and prison health centers;

    (ii)  Any entity responsible for matching anatomical gift donors to potential recipients. See Rhode Island General Laws 23-95-3

  • Damages: Money paid by defendants to successful plaintiffs in civil cases to compensate the plaintiffs for their injuries.
  • Deed: The legal instrument used to transfer title in real property from one person to another.
  • Department: means the Rhode Island department of health. See Rhode Island General Laws 23-94-2
  • Department: means the department of transportation, or, if the department shall be abolished, the board, body, or commission succeeding to the principal functions thereof or upon whom the powers given by chapter 5 of Title 37 to the department shall be given by law. See Rhode Island General Laws 24-12-1
  • Director: means the director of the department of transportation. See Rhode Island General Laws 24-15-2
  • Director: means the director of the department of labor and training;

    (2)  "Economic necessity" means and refers to any case where the director determines that:

    (i)  Both the economics and technology of manufacture of the product or a component of the product requires continuous conversion or processing of raw materials, intermediates, or components without interruption to avoid disproportionate loss of production capacity;

    (ii)  The economics and technology of data processing requires the continuous operation of data processing equipment to avoid deterioration of equipment or a disproportionate loss of computer capacity or where customer requirements are that data processing equipment must be available for input or output on a continuous basis;

    (iii)  Because prevailing industry practice in the manufacturing or processing of the product or in the provision of banking or financial services is to operate facilities within that industry seven (7) days per week, the failure to operate on one or more Sundays or holidays will subject the employer to a competitive hardship within the industry in which the employer competes;

    (iv)  Maintenance or improvement of plant or equipment cannot practically or efficiently be performed while production is in process;

    (v)  The scheduling of production on Sundays or holidays is necessitated by interrupted or allocated energy supplies, or shortages of raw materials or component parts;

    (vi)  An employer has been deprived of its normal production schedule by fire, flood, power failure, or other circumstances beyond its control; or

    (vii)  Circumstances, temporary in nature, are that undue economic hardship would result from the inability to operate on one or more Sundays or holidays;

    (3)  "Employee" means any individual employed by an employer, but shall not include:

    (i)  Any individual employed in agriculture or maritime trades, including commercial fishing or boat repairs;

    (ii)  Any physician, dentist, attorney at law, or accountant;

    (iii)  Any individual engaged in the provision of health care or maintenance;

    (iv)  Any individual employed in a restaurant, hotel, motel, summer camp, resort, or other recreational facility (except health clubs);

    (v)  Any individual employed in the business of offshore petroleum or gas exploration or extraction, or in the business of servicing or supplying persons engaged in exploration or extraction;

    (vi)  Supervisory employees as defined in Rhode Island General Laws 25-3-1

  • Disability: means a disability as defined in § 42-87-1 in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, as amended by the ADA Amendments Act of 2008, at Rhode Island General Laws 23-95-3
  • Discarded mattress: means any mattress that a consumer intends to discard, has discarded, or that is abandoned. See Rhode Island General Laws 23-90-3
  • Docket: A log containing brief entries of court proceedings.
  • Donor: The person who makes a gift.
  • Employee: means any individual employed by an employer, but shall not include:

    (i)  Any individual employed in agriculture or maritime trades, including commercial fishing or boat repairs;

    (ii)  Any physician, dentist, attorney at law, or accountant;

    (iii)  Any individual engaged in the provision of health care or maintenance;

    (iv)  Any individual employed in a restaurant, hotel, motel, summer camp, resort, or other recreational facility (except health clubs);

    (v)  Any individual employed in the business of offshore petroleum or gas exploration or extraction, or in the business of servicing or supplying persons engaged in exploration or extraction;

    (vi)  Supervisory employees as defined in Rhode Island General Laws 25-3-1

  • Employer: means any natural person, partnership, firm, corporation, or other enterprise engaged in industry, transportation, communication, or any other commercial occupation involving one or more employees; and

    (5)  "Holidays" means Sunday, New Year's Day, Memorial Day, July 4th, Victory Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans' Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas; provided, that as it pertains to all offices of state and municipal government, the term "holiday" includes in addition to the holidays enumerated in this subdivision, Dr. See Rhode Island General Laws 25-3-1

  • Energy recovery: means the process by which all or a portion of solid waste materials are processed or combusted in order to utilize the heat content or other forms of energy derived from such solid waste materials. See Rhode Island General Laws 23-90-3
  • Equitable: Pertaining to civil suits in "equity" rather than in "law." In English legal history, the courts of "law" could order the payment of damages and could afford no other remedy. See damages. A separate court of "equity" could order someone to do something or to cease to do something. See, e.g., injunction. In American jurisprudence, the federal courts have both legal and equitable power, but the distinction is still an important one. For example, a trial by jury is normally available in "law" cases but not in "equity" cases. Source: U.S. Courts
  • Evidence: Information presented in testimony or in documents that is used to persuade the fact finder (judge or jury) to decide the case for one side or the other.
  • Ex officio: Literally, by virtue of one's office.
  • Executive session: A portion of the Senate's daily session in which it considers executive business.
  • Eye assessment: means an assessment of the ocular health and visual status of a patient that may include, but is not limited to, objective refractive data or information generated by an assessment mechanism or an automated testing device, including an autorefractor, in order to establish a medical diagnosis for the correction of vision disorders. See Rhode Island General Laws 23-97-2
  • Fair market value: The price at which an asset would change hands in a transaction between a willing, informed buyer and a willing, informed seller.
  • Fee simple: Absolute title to property with no limitations or restrictions regarding the person who may inherit it.
  • Ferry franchise: means the existing franchises and rights to operate ferries belonging to the Jamestown and Newport ferry company, but not including any other intangible personal property or real estate or tangible personal property of the corporation which shall remain the property of the corporation. See Rhode Island General Laws 24-12-1
  • Fiduciary: A trustee, executor, or administrator.
  • Fiscal year: The fiscal year is the accounting period for the government. For the federal government, this begins on October 1 and ends on September 30. The fiscal year is designated by the calendar year in which it ends; for example, fiscal year 2006 begins on October 1, 2005 and ends on September 30, 2006.
  • Foundation: means any ticking-covered structure that is used to support a mattress and that is composed of one or more of the following: A constructed frame, foam, or a box spring. See Rhode Island General Laws 23-90-3
  • Gift: A voluntary transfer or conveyance of property without consideration, or for less than full and adequate consideration based on fair market value.
  • Guardian: A person legally empowered and charged with the duty of taking care of and managing the property of another person who because of age, intellect, or health, is incapable of managing his (her) own affairs.
  • holiday: includes in addition to the holidays enumerated in this subdivision, Dr. See Rhode Island General Laws 25-3-1
  • Holidays: means Sunday, New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth National Freedom Day, July 4th, Victory Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans' Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas; provided, that as it pertains to all offices of state and municipal government, the term "holiday" includes in addition to the holidays enumerated in this subdivision, Dr. See Rhode Island General Laws 25-3-1
  • Hub: means the Rhode Island life science hub established by § 23-99-4. See Rhode Island General Laws 23-99-3
  • in writing: include printing, engraving, lithographing, and photo-lithographing, and all other representations of words in letters of the usual form. See Rhode Island General Laws 43-3-16
  • Injunction: An order of the court prohibiting (or compelling) the performance of a specific act to prevent irreparable damage or injury.
  • Interest rate: The amount paid by a borrower to a lender in exchange for the use of the lender's money for a certain period of time. Interest is paid on loans or on debt instruments, such as notes or bonds, either at regular intervals or as part of a lump sum payment when the issue matures. Source: OCC
  • Interstate system: means that portion of the national system of interstate and defense highways located within this state, as officially designated, or as may hereafter be so designated, by the director of transportation, and approved pursuant to the provisions of title 23, United States Code, Highways. See Rhode Island General Laws 24-10.1-2
  • Investment fund: means the hub investment fund established by § 23-99-6. See Rhode Island General Laws 23-99-3
  • Jamestown Bridge: means the former bridge over the west passage of Narragansett Bay between the towns of Jamestown and North Kingstown constructed by the Jamestown Bridge commission under the provisions of chapter 2536 of the Public Laws, 1937 and the approaches thereto, and shall embrace all tollhouses, administration, and other buildings and structures used in connection therewith, together with all property, rights, easements, and interests acquired by the Jamestown Bridge commission in connection with the construction and operation of the bridge. See Rhode Island General Laws 24-12-1
  • Jamestown Verrazzano Bridge: means the bridge constructed in replacement of the Jamestown Bridge, as defined in subdivision (7) and the approaches thereto, and shall embrace all tollhouses, administration, and other buildings and structures used in connection therewith, together with all property, rights, easements, and interests acquired by the authority in connection with the construction and operation of such bridge. See Rhode Island General Laws 24-12-1
  • Joint resolution: A legislative measure which requires the approval of both chambers.
  • Jurisdiction: (1) The legal authority of a court to hear and decide a case. Concurrent jurisdiction exists when two courts have simultaneous responsibility for the same case. (2) The geographic area over which the court has authority to decide cases.
  • Lease: A contract transferring the use of property or occupancy of land, space, structures, or equipment in consideration of a payment (e.g., rent). Source: OCC
  • Liabilities: The aggregate of all debts and other legal obligations of a particular person or legal entity.
  • Licensed professional: means any licensed medical, mental health, or human services professional licensed pursuant to title 5 including, but not limited to: any psychologist, psychiatrist, social worker, nurse, mental health professional, human services professional, under any provisions of the general law, rule or regulation to the contrary. See Rhode Island General Laws 23-94-2
  • Lien: A claim against real or personal property in satisfaction of a debt.
  • Life science: means and shall include, but not be limited to, the science of: medical devices, biomedical technology, medical therapeutic therapies, biogenetics, biomedical engineering, biopharmaceuticals, genomics, biomanufacturing, diagnostics, digital health, and related fields. See Rhode Island General Laws 23-99-3
  • Life science company: means a company engaged in life science research, development, manufacturing, incubation, or commercialization in Rhode Island, and any affiliate thereof. See Rhode Island General Laws 23-99-3
  • Life sciences industry: means the fields of medical devices, biomedical technology, medical therapeutic therapies, biogenetics, biomedical engineering, biopharmaceuticals, genomics, biomanufacturing, diagnostics, digital health, and related fields. See Rhode Island General Laws 23-99-3
  • Litigation: A case, controversy, or lawsuit. Participants (plaintiffs and defendants) in lawsuits are called litigants.
  • Maintenance: means the normal repair of outdoor advertising due to wear and tear. See Rhode Island General Laws 24-10.1-2
  • Mattress: includes any foundation, renovated foundation, or renovated mattress. See Rhode Island General Laws 23-90-3
  • Mattress core: means the main support system that is present in a mattress, including, but not limited to: springs, foam, air bladder, water bladder, or resilient filling. See Rhode Island General Laws 23-90-3
  • Mattress stewardship fee: means the amount added to the purchase price of a mattress sold in this state that is necessary to cover the cost of collecting, transporting, and processing discarded mattresses by the council pursuant to the mattress stewardship program. See Rhode Island General Laws 23-90-3
  • Mattress topper: means any item that contains resilient filling, with or without ticking, that is intended to be used with or on top of a mattress. See Rhode Island General Laws 23-90-3
  • Mortgage: The written agreement pledging property to a creditor as collateral for a loan.
  • Mortgagee: The person to whom property is mortgaged and who has loaned the money.
  • Mount Hope Bridge: means the existing bridge between the towns of Bristol and Portsmouth and the approaches thereto, which was constructed by the Mount Hope Bridge corporation and which was acquired and is now owned and operated by the Mount Hope Bridge authority under the provisions of chapter 13 of this title, and shall embrace all tollhouses, administration, and other buildings and structures used in connection therewith, together with all property, rights, easements, and interests acquired by the Mount Hope Bridge corporation or the Mount Hope Bridge authority in connection with the construction and operation of the bridge. See Rhode Island General Laws 24-12-1
  • Municipality: means a city or town. See Rhode Island General Laws 24-15-2
  • Newport Bridge: means the bridge or tunnel or combination of bridge and tunnel constructed or to be constructed under the provisions of this chapter over or under the waters of Narragansett Bay between Conanicut Island and Aquidneck Island, shall embrace the substructure and the superstructure thereof and the approaches thereto and the entrance plazas, interchanges, overpasses, underpasses, tollhouses, administration, storage, and other buildings, and highways connecting the bridge or tunnel with the Jamestown Verrazzano Bridge (defined in subdivision (8)) and with state highways as the authority may determine to construct from time to time in connection therewith, together with all property, rights, easements, and interests acquired by the authority for the construction and operation of the bridge or tunnel or combination of bridge and tunnel. See Rhode Island General Laws 24-12-1
  • Oath: A promise to tell the truth.
  • oath: includes affirmation; the word "sworn" includes affirmed; and the word "engaged" includes either sworn or affirmed. See Rhode Island General Laws 43-3-11
  • Obligation: An order placed, contract awarded, service received, or similar transaction during a given period that will require payments during the same or a future period.
  • Organ transplant: means the transplantation or transfusion of a part of a human body into the body of another for the purpose of treating or curing a medical condition. See Rhode Island General Laws 23-95-3
  • Outdoor advertising: means an outdoor sign, display, light, device, figure, painting, drawing, message, plaque, poster, billboard, structure, or other thing which is designed, intended or used to advertise or inform, any part of the advertising or information contents of which is visible from any place on the main-traveled way of the interstate, primary, or secondary systems. See Rhode Island General Laws 24-10.1-2
  • Oversight: Committee review of the activities of a Federal agency or program.
  • Owner: means and include all individuals, incorporated companies, partnerships, societies, or associations, and also municipalities, political subdivisions, and all public agencies and instrumentalities, having any title or interest in any property, rights, easements, or franchises authorized to be acquired under the provisions of this chapter. See Rhode Island General Laws 24-12-1
  • Partnership: A voluntary contract between two or more persons to pool some or all of their assets into a business, with the agreement that there will be a proportional sharing of profits and losses.
  • Person: means an individual, corporation, trust, partnership, incorporated or unincorporated association, and any other legal entity. See Rhode Island General Laws 23-97-2
  • Person: means a natural person, company, or other legal entity. See Rhode Island General Laws 23-99-3
  • person: may be construed to extend to and include co-partnerships and bodies corporate and politic. See Rhode Island General Laws 43-3-6
  • Personal property: All property that is not real property.
  • Plaintiff: The person who files the complaint in a civil lawsuit.
  • Prescription: means a handwritten or electronic order issued by a provider that includes:

    (i)  In the case of contact lenses, all information required by the Fairness to Contact Lens Consumers Act, Rhode Island General Laws 23-97-2

  • Primary systems: means that portion of connected main highways, as officially designated, or as may hereafter be so designated, by the director of transportation, pursuant to the provisions of title 23, United States Code, Highways. See Rhode Island General Laws 24-10.1-2
  • Probate: Proving a will
  • Producer: includes :

    (i)  The owner of a trademark or brand under which a mattress is sold, offered for sale, or distributed in this state, whether or not such trademark or brand is registered in this state; and

    (ii)  Any person who imports a mattress into the United States that is sold or offered for sale in this state and that is manufactured or renovated by a person who does not have a presence in the United States;

    (18)  "Recycling" means any process in which discarded mattresses, components, and by-products may lose their original identity or form as they are transformed into new, usable, or marketable materials. See Rhode Island General Laws 23-90-3

  • program: means the state wide, program described in § 23-90-5 and implemented pursuant to the mattress stewardship plan as approved by the corporation director. See Rhode Island General Laws 23-90-3
  • Project: means the "Newport Bridge" "Mount Hope Bridge" "Sakonnet River Bridge" "Jamestown Verrazzano Bridge" the "turnpike" or any "additional facility" as the case may be, or any portion thereof which may be financed, acquired or leased under the provisions of this chapter. See Rhode Island General Laws 24-12-1
  • Prosecute: To charge someone with a crime. A prosecutor tries a criminal case on behalf of the government.
  • Provider: means a healthcare professional licensed under chapter 35. See Rhode Island General Laws 23-97-2
  • Public law: A public bill or joint resolution that has passed both chambers and been enacted into law. Public laws have general applicability nationwide.
  • Qualified recipient: means an individual who has a disability and meets the essential eligibility requirements for the receipt of an anatomical gift with or without any of the following:

    (i)  Individuals or entities available to support and assist the individual with an anatomical gift or transplantation;

    (ii)  Auxiliary aids or services;

    (iii)  Reasonable modifications to the policies, practices, or procedures of a covered entity, including modifications to allow for either or both of the following:

    (A)  Communication with one or more individuals or entities available to support or assist with the recipient's care and medication after surgery or transplantation;

    (B)  Consideration of support networks available to the individual, including family, friends, and home and community-based services, including home and community-based services funded through Medicaid, Medicare, another health plan in which the individual is enrolled, or any program or source of funding available to the individual, when determining whether the individual is able to comply with post-transplant medical requirements. See Rhode Island General Laws 23-95-3

  • Quorum: The number of legislators that must be present to do business.
  • real estate: may be construed to include lands, tenements, and hereditaments and rights thereto and interests therein. See Rhode Island General Laws 43-3-10
  • Real property: Land, and all immovable fixtures erected on, growing on, or affixed to the land.
  • Recycling: means any process in which discarded mattresses, components, and by-products may lose their original identity or form as they are transformed into new, usable, or marketable materials. See Rhode Island General Laws 23-90-3
  • Remainder: An interest in property that takes effect in the future at a specified time or after the occurrence of some event, such as the death of a life tenant.
  • Renovator: means a person who renovates discarded mattresses for the purpose of reselling such mattresses in a retail store. See Rhode Island General Laws 23-90-3
  • Retailer: means any person who sells mattresses in this state or offers mattresses in this state to a consumer through any means, including, but not limited to, remote offerings such as sales outlets, catalogs, or the internet. See Rhode Island General Laws 23-90-3
  • Sakonnet River Bridge: means the replacement Sakonnet River bridge constructed or to be constructed under the provisions of Article 36 of Chapter 376 of the Public Laws of 2003 between the towns of Tiverton and Portsmouth and shall embrace the substructure and the superstructure thereof and the approaches thereto and the toll structures, interchanges, overpasses, underpasses, tollhouses, administration, storage, and other buildings, and highways connecting the bridge with state highways, as the authority may determine to construct or acquire from time to time in connection therewith, together with all property, rights, easements, and interests acquired by the authority for the construction and operation of the bridge.   • Sale: means the transfer of title of a mattress for consideration, including through the use of a sales outlet, catalog, internet website, or similar electronic means. See Rhode Island General Laws 23-90-3
  • seal: shall be construed to include an impression of the seal made with or without the use of wax or wafer on the paper. See Rhode Island General Laws 43-3-15
  • Secondary systems: means that portion of state maintained roads that are neither interstate nor primary roads. See Rhode Island General Laws 24-10.1-2
  • State: means the state of Rhode Island. See Rhode Island General Laws 23-99-3
  • Statute: A law passed by a legislature.
  • Statute of limitations: A law that sets the time within which parties must take action to enforce their rights.
  • Sterilization: means the mitigation of any deleterious substances or organisms including human disease-causing pathogens, fungi, and insects from a mattress or filling material using a process approved by the department of business regulation. See Rhode Island General Laws 23-90-3
  • Subpoena: A command to a witness to appear and give testimony.
  • Summons: Another word for subpoena used by the criminal justice system.
  • Testimony: Evidence presented orally by witnesses during trials or before grand juries.
  • Ticking: means the outermost layer of fabric or material of a mattress. See Rhode Island General Laws 23-90-3
  • Tort: A civil wrong or breach of a duty to another person, as outlined by law. A very common tort is negligent operation of a motor vehicle that results in property damage and personal injury in an automobile accident.
  • town: may be construed to include city; the words "town council" include city council; the words "town clerk" include city clerk; the words "ward clerk" include clerk of election district; the words "town treasurer" include city treasurer; and the words "town sergeant" include city sergeant. See Rhode Island General Laws 43-3-9

  • Transcript: A written, word-for-word record of what was said, either in a proceeding such as a trial or during some other conversation, as in a transcript of a hearing or oral deposition.
  • Trial: A hearing that takes place when the defendant pleads "not guilty" and witnesses are required to come to court to give evidence.
  • Trustee: A person or institution holding and administering property in trust.
  • Turnpike: means the controlled access highway or any portion thereof to be constructed or acquired, from time to time, under the provisions of this chapter from a point at or near the Connecticut-Rhode Island border through the county of Washington and the county of Newport to a point at or near the Massachusetts-Rhode Island border in the town of Tiverton (excluding the Jamestown Verrazzano Bridge, the Mount Hope Bridge, the Newport Bridge, and the Sakonnet River Bridge), together with all bridges (except those mentioned above), overpasses, underpasses, interchanges, entrance plazas, approaches, approach roads, tollhouses, service stations, and administration, storage, and other buildings and facilities which the authority may deem necessary for the operation of the turnpike, together with all property, rights, easements, and interests which may be acquired by the authority for the construction or the operation of the turnpike.   • United States: include the several states and the territories of the United States. See Rhode Island General Laws 43-3-8
  • Upholstery material: means all material, loose or attached, between the ticking and the core of a mattress. See Rhode Island General Laws 23-90-3
  • Venture: means , without limitation, any contractual arrangement with any person whereby the corporation obtains rights from or in an invention or product or proceeds therefrom, or rights to obtain from any person any and all forms of equity instruments including, but not limited to, common and preferred stock, warrants, options, convertible debentures, and similar types of instruments exercisable or convertible into capital stock, in exchange for the granting of financial aid to such person. See Rhode Island General Laws 23-99-3
  • Verdict: The decision of a petit jury or a judge.
  • Victim advocate: work with prosecutors and assist the victims of a crime.
  • Visual aid glasses: means eyeglasses, spectacles, or lenses designed or used to correct visual defects, including spectacles that may be adjusted by the wearer to achieve different types or levels of visual correction or enhancement. See Rhode Island General Laws 23-97-2
