- Adoptee: means a child who is to be adopted or who is adopted. See Michigan Laws 722.952
- Adoption attorney: means that term as defined in section 22 of the adoption code, MCL 710. See Michigan Laws 722.952
- Adoption code: means the Michigan adoption code, chapter X of the probate code of 1939, 1939 PA 288, MCL 710. See Michigan Laws 722.952
- Adoption facilitator: means a child placing agency or an adoption attorney. See Michigan Laws 722.952
- Adoptive parent: means the parent or parents who adopt a child in accordance with the adoption code. See Michigan Laws 722.952
- Appropriation: The provision of funds, through an annual appropriations act or a permanent law, for federal agencies to make payments out of the Treasury for specified purposes. The formal federal spending process consists of two sequential steps: authorization
- Attachment: A procedure by which a person's property is seized to pay judgments levied by the court.
- Child placing agency: means that term as defined in section 1 of 1973 PA 116, MCL 722. See Michigan Laws 722.952
- Complaint: A written statement by the plaintiff stating the wrongs allegedly committed by the defendant.
- Contract: A legal written agreement that becomes binding when signed.
- Department: means the department of health and human services. See Michigan Laws 722.952
- Direct placement: means that term as defined in section 22 of the adoption code, MCL 710. See Michigan Laws 722.952
- Docket: A log containing brief entries of court proceedings.
- Evidence: Information presented in testimony or in documents that is used to persuade the fact finder (judge or jury) to decide the case for one side or the other.
- Fiscal year: The fiscal year is the accounting period for the government. For the federal government, this begins on October 1 and ends on September 30. The fiscal year is designated by the calendar year in which it ends; for example, fiscal year 2006 begins on October 1, 2005 and ends on September 30, 2006.
- Foster care: means a child's placement outside the child's parental home by and under the supervision of a child placing agency, the court, or the department. See Michigan Laws 722.952
- Guardian: A person legally empowered and charged with the duty of taking care of and managing the property of another person who because of age, intellect, or health, is incapable of managing his (her) own affairs.
- in writing: shall be construed to include printing, engraving, and lithographing; except that if the written signature of a person is required by law, the signature shall be the proper handwriting of the person or, if the person is unable to write, the person's proper mark, which may be, unless otherwise expressly prohibited by law, a clear and classifiable fingerprint of the person made with ink or another substance. - Jurisdiction: (1) The legal authority of a court to hear and decide a case. Concurrent jurisdiction exists when two courts have simultaneous responsibility for the same case. (2) The geographic area over which the court has authority to decide cases.
- person: may extend and be applied to bodies politic and corporate, as well as to individuals. See Michigan Laws 8.3l
- Power of attorney: A written instrument which authorizes one person to act as another's agent or attorney. The power of attorney may be for a definite, specific act, or it may be general in nature. The terms of the written power of attorney may specify when it will expire. If not, the power of attorney usually expires when the person granting it dies. Source: OCC
- Preplacement assessment: means an assessment of a prospective adoptive parent as described in section 23f of the adoption code, MCL 710. See Michigan Laws 722.952
- Probate: Proving a will
- Sibling: means a child who is related through birth or adoption by at least 1 common parent. See Michigan Laws 722.952
- state: when applied to the different parts of the United States, shall be construed to extend to and include the District of Columbia and the several territories belonging to the United States; and the words "United States" shall be construed to include the district and territories. See Michigan Laws 8.3o
- Supervising agency: means the department if a child is placed in the department's care for foster care, or a child placing agency in whose care a child is placed for foster care. See Michigan Laws 722.952
