(1) An applicant for personalized license plates or renewal of the plates shall file an application for the plates in the form and by the date the division requires, indicating the combination of letters, numbers, or both requested as a registration number.

Terms Used In Utah Code 41-1a-411

  • Division: means the Motor Vehicle Division of the commission, created in Section 41-1a-106. See Utah Code 41-1a-102
  • Registration: means a document issued by a jurisdiction that allows operation of a vehicle or vessel on the highways or waters of this state for the time period for which the registration is valid and that is evidence of compliance with the registration requirements of the jurisdiction. See Utah Code 41-1a-102
  • Sex: means , in relation to an individual, the individual's biological sex, either male or female, at birth, according to distinct reproductive roles as manifested by:
         (34)(a) sex and reproductive organ anatomy;
         (34)(b) chromosomal makeup; and
         (34)(c) endogenous hormone profiles. See Utah Code 68-3-12.5
  • Special group license plate: means a type of license plate designed for a particular group of people or a license plate authorized and issued by the division in accordance with Section 41-1a-418 or Part 16, Sponsored Special Group License Plates. See Utah Code 41-1a-102
  • State: when applied to the different parts of the United States, includes a state, district, or territory of the United States. See Utah Code 68-3-12.5

     (2)(a) Except as provided in Subsection (3), the division may refuse to issue any combination of letters, numbers, or both that:

          (2)(a)(i) may carry connotations offensive to good taste and decency or that would be misleading; or
          (2)(a)(ii) disparages a group based on:

               (2)(a)(ii)(A) race;
               (2)(a)(ii)(B) color;
               (2)(a)(ii)(C) national origin;
               (2)(a)(ii)(D) religion;
               (2)(a)(ii)(E) age;
               (2)(a)(ii)(F) sex;
               (2)(a)(ii)(G) gender identity;
               (2)(a)(ii)(H) sexual orientation;
               (2)(a)(ii)(I) citizenship status; or
               (2)(a)(ii)(J) physical or mental disability.
     (2)(b) The division may refuse to issue a combination of letters, numbers, or both as a registration number if that same combination is already in use as a registration number on an existing license plate.
(3)

     (3)(a) Except as provided in Subsection (2) or (3)(b), the division may not refuse a combination of letters, numbers, or both as a registration number if:

          (3)(a)(i) the license plate is an honor special group license plate as described in Section 41-1a-421, and the combination of letters, numbers, or both refers to:

               (3)(a)(i)(A) a year related to military service;
               (3)(a)(i)(B) a military branch; or
               (3)(a)(i)(C) an official achievement, badge, or honor received for military service; or
          (3)(a)(ii) the combination of letters, numbers, or both as a registration number refers to an official state symbol described in Section 63G-1-601.
     (3)(b) If an applicant requests a combination containing only numbers, the division may refuse the combination if the combination includes less than four numerical digits.
