- active duty: means full-time service in:

- Amendment: A proposal to alter the text of a pending bill or other measure by striking out some of it, by inserting new language, or both. Before an amendment becomes part of the measure, thelegislature must agree to it.
- Americans with Disabilities Act: refers to the Americans with Disabilities Act (Indiana Code 5-10-5.5-1

- Amortization: Paying off a loan by regular installments.
- Annuity: A periodic (usually annual) payment of a fixed sum of money for either the life of the recipient or for a fixed number of years. A series of payments under a contract from an insurance company, a trust company, or an individual. Annuity payments are made at regular intervals over a period of more than one full year.
- Answer: The formal written statement by a defendant responding to a civil complaint and setting forth the grounds for defense.
- Appeal: A request made after a trial, asking another court (usually the court of appeals) to decide whether the trial was conducted properly. To make such a request is "to appeal" or "to take an appeal." One who appeals is called the appellant.

- Attachment: A procedure by which a person's property is seized to pay judgments levied by the court.
- Autism: means a neurological condition as described in the most recent edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders of the American Psychiatric Association. See Indiana Code 1-1-4-5
- automatic location information: means information that is transmitted while 911 service is provided and that permits emergency service providers to identify the geographic location of the party initiating the communication. See Indiana Code 36-8-16.7-2
- automatic number identification: has the meaning set forth in Indiana Code 36-8-16.7-3
- Average annual salary: means the average annual salary of an officer during the five (5) years of highest annual salary in the ten (10) years immediately preceding an officer's retirement date, determined without regard to any salary reduction agreement established under Section 125 of the Internal Revenue Code. - Bail: Security given for the release of a criminal defendant or witness from legal custody (usually in the form of money) to secure his/her appearance on the day and time appointed.
- Bailiff: a court officer who enforces the rules of behavior in courtrooms.
- Baseline: Projection of the receipts, outlays, and other budget amounts that would ensue in the future without any change in existing policy. Baseline projections are used to gauge the extent to which proposed legislation, if enacted into law, would alter current spending and revenue levels.
- Beneficiary: A person who is entitled to receive the benefits or proceeds of a will, trust, insurance policy, retirement plan, annuity, or other contract. Source: OCC

- consumer: means a person that purchases prepaid wireless telecommunications service from a seller. See Indiana Code 36-8-16.6-2
- Conviction: A judgement of guilt against a criminal defendant.

In American jurisprudence, the federal courts have both legal and equitable power, but the distinction is still an important one. - Fair market value: The price at which an asset would change hands in a transaction between a willing, informed buyer and a willing, informed seller.
- Fee simple: Absolute title to property with no limitations or restrictions regarding the person who may inherit it.

- fire company: means each organization or group doing duty as part of the fire department, including engine companies, hose companies, those in the telephone or telegraph service, inspectors, mechanics, watchmen, and others in charge of apparatus for extinguishing fires. See Indiana Code 36-8-7-2

- Fraud: Intentional deception resulting in injury to another.
- Freeholder: means an individual who holds land in fee, for life, or for some indeterminate period of time, whether or not in joint title. See Indiana Code 36-8-11-2
- full-time firefighter: means a full-time, fully paid firefighter employed by a political subdivision. See Indiana Code 36-8-10.5-3
- fund: refers to the statewide 911 fund established by Indiana Code 36-8-16.6-5

- Joint tenancy: A form of property ownership in which two or more parties hold an undivided interest in the same property that was conveyed under the same instrument at the same time. A joint tenant can sell his (her) interest but not dispose of it by will. Upon the death of a joint tenant, his (her) undivided interest is distributed among the surviving joint tenants.

- review panel: refers to a mental health disability review panel established under section 4 of this chapter. See Indiana Code 36-8-8.3-2
- Salary: means the total compensation, exclusive of expense allowances, paid to any officer by the department or the commission, determined without regard to any salary reduction agreement established under Section 125 of the Internal Revenue Code. See Indiana Code 5-10-5.5-1
- school resource officer: has the meaning set forth in Indiana Code 36-8-8-2.2
- Secondary county: refers to the county where the smallest portion of a municipality is located if the municipality is located in two (2) counties. See Indiana Code 36-8-11-2
- seller: means a person that sells prepaid wireless telecommunications service to another person, including a retail merchant that meets the economic threshold under Indiana Code 36-8-16.6-10
- Service of process: The service of writs or summonses to the appropriate party.

- state agency: means any agency, board, commission, department, bureau, or other entity of the administrative branch of Indiana state government. See Indiana Code 36-8-10.7-4

- Testify: Answer questions in court.
- Testimony: Evidence presented orally by witnesses during trials or before grand juries.

- Tort: A civil wrong or breach of a duty to another person, as outlined by law. A very common tort is negligent operation of a motor vehicle that results in property damage and personal injury in an automobile accident.
- Transcript: A written, word-for-word record of what was said, either in a proceeding such as a trial or during some other conversation, as in a transcript of a hearing or oral deposition.
- Trial: A hearing that takes place when the defendant pleads "not guilty" and witnesses are required to come to court to give evidence.
- Trust fund: means the assets of the pension trust and consists of voluntary contributions from the department, money paid from the wages of employee beneficiaries, and other payments or contributions made to the pension trust, including the income and proceeds derived from the investment of them. - Trustee: refers to the trustee of the pension trust, who may be one (1) or more corporate trustees or the treasurer of the county serving under bond. See Indiana Code 36-8-10-2
